Post: Young Adults Transition Peer Worker – Mental Health

Responsible to: Team Manager

Location: Haringey

Salary: £23,760 per year rising to £24,408 per annum, after 1 year and successful probation

Weekly contracted Hours: 39 hours per week

Contract Type: Permanent, Full Time

About the Service/Department:

The Haringey Mental Health Integrated Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) Service supports residents aged 18 and over with moderate to severe mental illness in the borough of Haringey. The service will act as a key component in the Barnet, Enfield, and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust (BEHMHT)’s new and emerging model for community mental health and wellbeing support. The new community models will deliver true integration of care and support across secondary mental health services, the Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS), primary care, social care, community assets as well as other physical health care provision. The Integrated VCS Service is typically provided on a 1:1 basis both in office, or in community hubs in the borough by appointment. It is also expected that new partnerships and community assets will be developed as part of this service to promote mental wellbeing and to address health inequalities in the borough.

The Role:

To provide high quality support and role model the ability to have a meaningful life for an allocated group of service users (aged 18-25) who are transitioning from CAMHS and young people accessing mental health services for the first time. To carry out duties in line with Hestia’s and BEHMHT’s policies and procedures.

Personal Specification

  • Education and Qualifications
  • Good level of secondary education to GCSE level, or equivalent
  • Level of educational attainment to NVQ 3 / AS Level or equivalent
  • Completion of the BEH Peer Worker Training within 6 months of the contract start date
  • Completion of a Wellness at Work plan within 2 months of the contract start date
  • (Desirable) Related Health or Social Care qualification
  • (Desirable) Willingness to undertake further training relevant to and in line with the development of peer support role
  • Experience and Knowledge
  • Lived experience of mental health problems and experience of using secondary care services.
  • Wide range of life experiences to bring an enabling and positive view of opportunities for others
  • Experience of being in a supportive and enabling role
  • Experience of working in a team or a group environment
  • Experience of using a range of self-management or recovery tools and techniques
  • Understanding and practical knowledge of recovery
  • Understanding of the issues and concerns of mental health service users
  • Understanding of the impact of stigma and discrimination
  • Knowledge of Mental Health Legislation
  • (Desirable) Experience of psychiatric hospital admission
  • (Desirable) Experience of working in the public sector
  • (Desirable) Experience of training, teaching, coaching/mentoring others
  • (Desirable) Experience of working across different organisational boundaries
  • (Desirable) Appreciation of the community resources within the geographical location of the post and key partners
  • (Desirable) Understanding of CPA and the role of care co-ordinator and knowledge of Trust Policies and procedures
  • (Desirable) Understanding of the service delivery goals of the care pathway
  • (Desirable) Knowledge of local policies in respect of safeguarding children and the protection of vulnerable adults
  • Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
  • Computer literate
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team and wider Trust

  • (Desirable) Computer literate in software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, Outlook Express etc
  • (Desirable) Able to speak and understand more than one language

  • Ability to travel across Barnet, Enfield and Haringey by car or public transport.
