Mō te tūnga - About the Role:

We are a small team of hearing screeners based at Christchurch Womens hospital. Our service offers hearing screening in the first month of life for all pēpi (babies) born in Canterbury. Our aim is to identify babies who have an increased risk of having a hearing loss and refer these pēpi to audiology so that any hearing loss can be identified before the age of 3 months. It is important to start interventions by 6 months so pēpi can develop normal communication and developmental skills.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako - Skills and Experience:

The main role is to provide hearing screening across Canterbury from Kaikoura to Ashburton. You will be screening at all the birthing units within the CDHB, in community clinics and in pēpi homes occasionally. You also do administration in following up whanau and making appointments for them. Working on hospital computer systems is also part of the role so good computer skills or ability to pick up new programs is important.

To be successful in this role you will have;

  • the ability to work as part of a team both within a hospital setting, in the community and te ao Māori
  • experience in handling and caring for young pÄ“pi.
  • strong communication, analytical and social skills.
  • Willingness to obtain a NZQA National Certificate in Health, Disability and Aged Support (Newborn Hearing Screening Level 3) must be completed within 1 year of employment and is part of the training for this role
