He angitūtanga | About the Role

The Department of Conservation manages Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park infrastructure encompassing high alpine huts, roads and facilities to a tourist village managing delivery of key services. As our next Supervisor of the Local Body Services and Heritage and Recreation teams you'll report to the local Operations Manager. You'll lead, coach and inspire your team; assign, monitor and review work with your team and foster a great working culture. Your passion for making a positive impact for conservation will shine through, inspiring your team to continuously strive to deliver great environmental outcomes. 

As a key part of the district's leadership team, you will lead your team of Rangers to deliver the district's Local Body work programme within Aoraki/Mount Cook Village and the Heritage/Visitor work programme with the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park.

Above all, the health and safety and wellbeing of staff will be your highest priority.

He kōrero mōu | What we are looking for

A natural people leader who is passionate about supporting a positive team culture. You may be out in the field with the team, incorporating a ‘management-by-walk-about' approach to your work. You will have great communication and engagement skills allowing a heightened sense of self-awareness and emotional intelligence. You will know how to engage effectively with Manawhenua and show a willingness to learn karakia, pepeha and local tikanga to develop your capability in this area, allowing you to work effectively with whānau, hapū, and iwi.

Required:

  • Proven leadership abilities, trade, and business skills, be innovative, systematic and able to mentor and manage staff. You must be physically fit, have a can-do attitude and is someone who wants to get things done.
  • Strategic analysis and decision-making, great planning and financial management.
  • Commitment to excellence – sets high personal and professional standards; assumes responsibility and accountability for the success of the team.
  • 5 plus years trade experience in construction or related sector and knowledge of delivering maintenance programmes over a broad range of infrastructure. A trade qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Strong computer literacy, proficiency in the use of Word, Excel, and cloud-based computing. A full driver's licence is a must have, and class 2 and a current first aid certificate would be an advantage.
  • Good backcountry skills and knowledge, and experience in search and rescue or emergency management
  • Proven health and safety focus and visitor risk identification and management

 Mō te tÄ«ma | About the team  

  • The 5 Local Body Rangers make up the team working on a 7-day roster who manage the Aoraki/Mount Cook Village council related services, water supply treatment system, storage tanks, intakes, oxidation ponds and compliance work.
  • The team manage the full village waste and recycling collection, landscaping, roading and public tracks within the village and snow clearing after winter snow events.
  • Property maintenance and compliance for 5 corporate buildings and 23 flats/houses.
  • Vehicle fleet, heavy plant and generator maintenance and compliance.
  • The 3 Heritage/Visitor Rangers manage the White Horse Hill Campground and front country facilities service work on a 7-day roster with lots of engagement with visitors.
  • 15 Hut's (6 high alpine), 2 Icon tracks, other tracks, bridges, and structures maintenance planned over a 12-month programme.
  • FENZ Urban and Rural Fire training and response
