About the team

Our Engineering and Maintenance directorate manages a $1.5 billion annual maintenance program on behalf of Sydney Trains and NSW Trains – delivering a safe, reliable passenger fleet and metropolitan rail network, to meet growing customer demand and keep Sydney moving. 

Our Fleet Maintenance Division maintains electric and diesel passenger fleets for Sydney Trains and NSW Train Link at seven depots spread across the network, as well as technical fault-finding advice to crew, in-service response to train faults and failures, and emergency train recovery. 

You will be working in a large team based in Tempe Maintenance Centre 

The opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a Shunter Operator to become a part of our Fleet Maintenance Division within Sydney Trains based at Tempe Maintenance Centre. This position will report to the Operations Team Leader and will work closely with other Fleet Maintenance staff including Multi discipline Trades Teams, Train Crewing, Presentation and Signal box operations. Tempe Maintenance Centre is a multi-branch site.

The primary purpose of this position is to receive, marshal and despatch trains within the Centre to facilitate the safe and efficient movement of trains for scheduled inspections, maintenance and repairs, to meet working timetables, Special Train Notices (STNs) to direct the placement of trains on specified roads and in particular positions. Placement will involve instructing drivers, operating points and making simple judgement as to the positioning of the train.

This is a full-time permanent opportunity, and the successful applicant will be required to work on a 24/7 shift work roster.   

What will you be involved in? 

  • Shunt XPT trains at the XPT Service Centre and elsewhere in the metropolitan area.
  • Pilot XPT vehicles in traffic for the purposes of turning cars and shunting.
  • Amalgamate and divide XPT vehicles.
  • Pilot XPT trains and other trains with the confines of the XPT Maintenance Centre.
  • Inspect and clean depot points.
  • Supervise staff and contractors required to work on tracks at the XPT Service Centre.
  • Operate the XPT train wash plant.
  • Remove and replace jumper couplings when dividing and amalgamating XPT trains.
  • Maintain radio batteries in a charged and serviceable condition.
  • Maintain Fleet Operators’ amenities and work areas in a clean and tidy condition.

About you 

Training will be provided to the successful applicant on site however the role requires an individual with a “can do make it happen” attitude a sound planner, problem-solving skills and the ability to multi-task and work within a Team to deliver safe outcomes each and every shift. The successful applicant will be flexible, adaptable, punctual, safety conscious, possess basic computer skills & be a strong communicator.
