Job Description

At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga | learners and whānau | families.

We help shape the policies, settings and performance of the education system for early learning, schooling and tertiary. We do this by building relationships and understanding the needs of those who receive our services.

About our group and team

Learning Support is a critical part of Te Mahau in Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education. 

We are charged with leading the education sector in ensuring that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education.

Our Learning Support practitioners work closely with families, whānau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and Māori medium settings and other agencies to help maximise learning outcomes and promote social inclusion.

This role presents an exciting and rewarding opportunity to work in an organisation committed to raising achievement and reducing disparity.

You will lead and work with a committed professional team delivering a range of Learning Support services to tamariki and rangatahi. You and your team will work with whānau, Communities of Learning, clusters of schools, schools/kura, early childhood providers, to strengthen inclusive practices, raise student achievement and deliver on communities' aspirations.

Mōhou ake | About you

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate:

  • An ability to develop strong connections and networks across the Ministry, local education providers, iwi, communities and whānau to achieve educational priorities for the region.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi and its implications for the work of the Ministry of Education.
  • The ability to lead a multi-disciplinary team of professionals and manage workload and resource issues.
  • The ability to work collaboratively within the context of the Learning Support Delivery Model to achieve positive outcomes that draw on the combined resources and expertise of the sector, services, and wider community.
  • An ability to broker support from across the Ministry and other agencies to deliver joined up work programmes tailored to local needs.
  • Experience at influencing and leading innovation, people, programmes, and change.
  • The ability to assess needs, risks, and performance issues and address gaps proactively.
  • The ability to follow through on complex or sensitive tasks and issues.
  • The ability to interpret and use data to inform decisions and to monitor and report on outcomes
  • A relevant tertiary qualification and current full driver's licence.
