Senior Strategic Advisor Regional Transport

About the role

As part of small highly capable policy team, you will lead regional transport strategy and planning in the Greater Wellington region on behalf of the Regional Transport Committee and GW.  You will lead long-term thinking and direction setting for transport and its role in promoting sustainable regional development and growth.  You will lead strategic thinking to identify best practice and champion its integration into regional land transport through actionable policy and investment recommendations. 

In your role, you will assist the Regional Transport Committee (RTC) and the Regional Council set the overall direction for regional transport, collaboratively develop with councils, transport agencies and other entities an overall integrated investment programme, and assist with its implementation.  You will also work closely with the Wellington Regional Leadership Committee Secretariat and members to support the development of the region’s spatial planning to include transport as a key enabler for the region’s development.

You will lead and manage change in the regional transport sector and have extensive experience at engaging and being influential at senior management and governance levels.

About you

You will bring your natural passion and curiosity about the future and how transport can shape a region’s future.

You would ideally have experience in the following areas:

  • A strong track record of working at a senior, strategic level in a similar field. This includes experience in public policy, local government, strategy and policy or research roles; or significant experience working in a transport, or spatial planning-related area with a strong aptitude for strategy and policy work

  • Demonstrated ability to lead work from ideation through to delivery

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in transport, resource management, public policy, political science or a related area.

  • Strong stakeholder management skills with demonstrated ability to work with and influence at the political and senior management levels

  • Ability to draw on advanced qualitative and quantitative frameworks, principles, tools and approaches and expert understanding of the range of techniques to monitor and evaluate policy performance

  • Policy management skills

  • Strong knowledge of the local government and/or transport planning mechanisms
