You'll have the following responsibilities
This role is one of our senior technical leadership roles in Applied Research, responsible for managing the ETU team and software productivity research.
It plays a pivotal role in researching and exploiting new approaches to software engineering, packaging up of BT software IP to facilitate technology licensing and exploitation, and transforming Applied Research’s own software practices. Key technologies include software engineering, modern cloud-ready and containerised paradigms, AI and data science.
Domain expert leading a team of researchers in ETU & Software Productivity Research that supports immediate and future research needs of the business.
Accountable for defining and performing research in software engineering particularly in areas that are unknown, complex, high impact and high value over long, medium and short term research horizons.
Leads on down-streaming and exploitation of research projects ensuring they generate maximum business value via revenue, cost savings and/or licensing value.
Responsible for intellectual property creation, managing patent filing in their team and supporting IPR exploitation where appropriate
Accountable for a range of stakeholder engagements across CFU’s to ensure research supports BT’s strategic goals.
Responsible for authoring thought leadership technical papers, capturing intellectual property
Evangelises new disruptive technologies across BT, and promoting BT as an innovative company externally through keynote presentations, publications, awards, standards representations etc.
Leads on numerous national and international collaborations with universities, industry partners and government agencies.
You'll have the following skills & experience
Technical Expertise: Strong software engineering capability with deep understanding of software design patterns, architectures and emerging software practices. Demonstrable experience applying software engineering principles, technologies and frameworks in developing reusable components (including REST APIs, micro-service architectures, infrastructure-as-code). Experience of and enthusiasm for Agile methodologies of working using test driven approaches and high levels of automation (CI/CD).
Qualifications: Outstanding academic record in relevant technology specialism (software engineering) with post-graduate qualification(s) (or equivalent).
Domain expertise: Experience in software engineering research and realising new and emerging technologies, particularly AI and ML, in cloud-ready architectures.
Open research and innovation experience: proven experience in leading applied research and innovation activities, including an ability to assemble collaborative projects and initiatives with industry, government and academia to achieve research goals. Well skilled in patenting, IPR exploitation, technical publications, keynote conference presentations etc.
Strong business acumen: Strong entrepreneurial skills for research down-streaming and exploitation. Able to determine research value of work and the best route to commercialisation. Knowledgeable in business strategy, market awareness and the drivers of organisational performance and change.
Expert communicator: Excellent presentation skills and experience presenting sometimes complex technologies and concepts to Board/CxO level customers and internal stakeholders to influence strategy and spend decisions.
Concept Evaluation: ability to spot relevant innovations, horizon scanning, determine relevance for the business, develop an effective conceptualisation and build trials to test the concept
Stakeholder management: excellent in managing multiple stakeholders externally and internally across the business at a variety of grade and seniority levels
