The Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) Programme was established in 2018 and is co-funded, governed and delivered through a Government Industry Agreement (GIA) between MPI and its industry partners (DairyNZ and Beef+Lamb NZ). It is a world-first attempt to eradicate this cattle disease from any country.
We have a strong focus on delivering the eradication effort of M. bovis while reducing the impacts on farmers and their whanau, together with taking the lessons learned from M. bovis into strengthening New Zealand's biosecurity system.
This is an exciting time – good progress has been made with the eradication effort. We are confident of eradicating this disease from New Zealand and are now planning how we transition the Programme through delimiting into the long-term surveillance operating phase in June 2023.
The M. bovis Transition Project is responsible for all the activities necessary to transition the Programme into the future operating model and management agency. The project is set up in five major workstreams, of which the Transition Workstream is delivering critical elements.
