Role Responsibility

We’re looking for a presenter who can build a relationship with listeners and keep them coming back week after week.

Duties include:

• Broadcast with clarity, directness and accuracy. Link programmes, and write or adapt material to fit the Radio 4 style and guidelines. Encourage and persuade the audience to expand their listening across Radio 4, 4extra and BBC Sounds. Keep listeners informed, especially during emergencies and departures from the published schedule.
• Manage the Radio 4 continuities and try, as far as possible, to anticipate problems, and cope with unforeseen events such as a line failure or equipment fault. Actions need to be according to the circumstances and may have a substantial impact on listeners’ perception of the network.
• To self-operate the continuity studio including the selection of outside sources, studios and lines and pre-recorded programmes.
• To contribute to the on-air presentation of Radio 3, including regular newsreading duties
• Be up to date and thoroughly familiar with the Network’s obituary, evacuation and editorial guidelines, and to be confident of carrying out procedures with authority and assurance.
• Liaise with the Duty Producer and the network’s operations team to arrive at suitable solutions to any potential problems.
• Maintain awareness of the networks promotional priorities, key events and online offerings.
• Maintain awareness of Radio 4’s audience, and latest trends.
• Undertake office-based duties connected with the role and in support of department, including the use of current office equipment and IT systems.
• Potential News reading duties, dependent on experience and editorial requirements.
• Comply with all relevant BBC Safety Rules, procedures and guidelines.
• Undertake shift work, including night and weekend work, based at Broadcasting House in London W1.
• Be fully aware of the Health and Safety responsibilities of this job role as stated in Radio’s H&S Policy

The Ideal Candidate

• You'll know Radio 4 well and have a clear understanding of the issues and current affairs that resonate with our audience. You'll also be a good people person and know how to get the best from our audience on air. 
• You will have substantial experience of live broadcasting.
• You’ll have a proven flair in writing for radio with elegance and originality.
• On air you’ll have a natural, authentic style which will allow the audience to develop a relationship with you and the station.
• You’ll understand the importance of BBC values and have a knowledge of editorial guidelines
• You will also be technically competent, calm and decisive under pressure and able to work collaboratively

Important Information:

To support your application please supply an audition. This should be a 45 second verbal trail that you have written yourself for broadcast just before the 1800 news on a weekday evening of your choosing. The trail should be looking ahead to the highlights of that evening on R4 and demonstrate the style you would bring to continuity.
