About the team

The Legal, Privacy and Internal Audit branch is within the Corporate Services division providing strategies, solutions and services that make our clients’ working lives easier and their projects more efficient and effective. Our high-performing legal team works collaboratively across the organisation, partnering to provide critical legal advice and guidance for sensitive and complex legal and regulatory matters. With close to 100 lawyers spread across 5 legal teams, we are one of the largest inhouse government legal departments in NSW. 

The opportunity

With the goal of delivering ever greater public value for the people of NSW, our Legal branch has undergone an organisational transformation in response to an unprecedented level of activity with a view to streamlining processes, enhancing the breadth and depth of our internal specialist skill-set and investing in our legal operational and practice management capabilities to drive efficiencies. As a result of this significant transformation, we have a permanent opportunity for a Senior Lawyer, Commercial.

Reporting to a Director Legal, Commercial & Technology, you will be a senior lawyer in the Commercial and Technology team within our Legal branch providing high quality, solutions focussed advice to support the achievement of organisational outcomes, minimise legal risk and deliver on our commitment to our customers, the people of NSW.  

The Commercial & Technology team advises on a wide variety of general commercial and ICT contracts as well as cutting edge projects such as trials for autonomous vehicles, electric scooters and the new Mobility-as-a-service app and establishing a Centre of Quantum Technology.  We also advise on ticketing, tolling, rail operations, passenger service contracts, marketing & sponsorship and intellectual property.

Supported by TfNSW’s genuine flexible work environment, tuned to a healthy work life balance, you will work in a hybrid model, with the main office located at 231 Elizabeth Street, Sydney.  We have several lawyers based in our Newcastle office so are also happy to receive applications from senior lawyers based in the Hunter region. 

About you

You are a commercial lawyer with advanced written and verbal communication skills, able to convey technical legal concepts clearly and succinctly.

You will be an experienced drafter, negotiator and communicator working closely with clients to drive commercially focussed outcomes. This will include experience advising on contracting models, procurement, providing effective legal solutions, and contract drafting.

For this role, we are looking for a professional who:

• Has a proven track record in complex commercial contracts
• Models the highest standards of integrity and professional conduct
• Collaborates well with other team members and builds good relationship with clients
• Has the ability to communicate and can influence effectively
• Provides timely, clear, succinct and considered advice, such that you inspire confidence in your clients as they grapple with high profile and often challenging issues
• Can manage challenging negotiations and drafting of contracts
• Holds a current NSW practicing certificate
• Ideally has knowledge of Government procurement frameworks, however experience working within the government sector is not essential; and
• Most importantly, is passionate about making a contribution to the future of NSW.

Salary and Benefits

The salary for this position is Grade 8A ($120,423) – 8E ($134,872) per annum plus superannuation and leave loading.
