The opportunity
We have an opportunity for a Senior Human Factors Specialist. The role provides expert, evidence-based advice regarding the implementation of human factors knowledge and principles across all transport modes and works closely with senior management to ensure the transport safety objectives of NSW are met.
As a Senior Human Factors Specialist, you will be expected to;
- Provide specialist technical support to the business relating to areas of project delivery, business-as-usual operations, investigations, human reliability and error analyses and modelling, behavioural safety and non-technical skills development, and research and capability development.
- Identify and develop strategic programs, policies and procedures for monitoring, assessment and integration of Human Factors through the business.
- Determine the desired level of Human Factors integration with respect to external practice, international and local standards.
- Contribute to the development, maintenance and continuous improvement of the Human Factors Integration requirements of the TfNSW, Sydney Trains and NSW TrainsLink Safety Management Systems in line with contemporary good practice and in order to fully meet regulatory requirements.
- Identify and develop the processes for the integration of user requirements into the design and operation of business and safety critical systems and processes.
- Report and analyse Human Factors related performance on specific issues arising from the business or the external environment on behalf of senior management.
- Execute safety responsibilities, authorities and accountabilities consistent with SMS requirements
- Role model, promote and actively demonstrate the five ways of leading behaviours to deliver organisational outcomes for our customers, our people and communities for the Greater Good.
Key challenges:
- Providing strategic and technical advice on complex and critical Human Factors issues and ensuring SMS and legislative compliance given the need to work across organisational boundaries and work proactively to mitigate risks and improve safety and system performance.
- Supporting transformational change where required, given the range of internal and external stakeholders, the potential resistance to change and the potential need for both structural and cultural change.

About you
- Professional experience in applying Human Factors within, or as a consultant to, organisations operating in complex, safety critical operational environments.
- Ability in the preparation of Human Factors analytical and assurance deliverables and the application of Human Factors principles, tools and methodologies within a complex, safety-critical operational environment.
- Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to manage different stakeholders and identify end-user needs.
Essential Requirements:
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline such as Human Factors/Ergonomics or Applied Psychology (e.g., Industrial, Organisational, Experimental, Cognitive). Other biophysical, psychosocial, technical or allied health science disciplines may be considered if the applicant’s focus in these is relevant to Human Factors/Ergonomics.
