The Department of Conservation is seeking applicants for the position of Senior Ranger, Community; Kaitiaki Matua, Ao Hapori based in Gisborne, Tairawhiti. The focus of the role is providing strategic advice, planning, monitoring and reporting on the District's Treaty partnership and Community team's work. This is a strategic role and requires a high degree of planning and strategic thinking in order to be successful.

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a strong, hardworking team and support growing conservation in the East Coast District alongside our Treaty partners and communities.

Core components of this role include:

  • Providing strategic advice to the Operations Manager on Community work priorities
  • Coordinating and planning for Community rangers
  • Monitoring and reporting on financial performance and resource allocation
  • Supporting and advising the Operations Manager, community team and wider district team on national, regional and local priorities
  • Supporting aspirations of iwi
  • Engaging effectively and confidently in te ao maori environment
  • Managing relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders; internal business groups, management, other public sector bodies, private sector organisations and local community groups.

The ideal applicant will:

  • Be comfortable pulling reports and utilising the data to make informed decisions, financial and non-financial
  • Have previous experience delegating and planning workloads for a wider team
  • Understand and have experience in how to prioritise critical tasks and issues
  • Demonstrate exceptional stakeholder engagement and have managed complex relationships externally and internally
  • Be able to identify issues, opportunities and innovative solutions
  • Be adept at learning and using a wide range of systems and processes
  • Demonstrate ability in building positive working relationships across a broad range of public and private sector businesses and groups;
  • Possess experience in working with whanau, hapu and iwi, with an understanding of te ao Maori - Highly advantageous
  • A good understanding of te reo me ona tikanga - highly desirable
  • Hold a current full New Zealand Driver License

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory.
