Ko tā mātou mahi - Our Role

We have a great opportunity for a Senior Sustainability Advisor to join our team. This role will have you working to improve the sustainability of the largest investment into housing and community infrastructure in a generation. Kāinga Ora has made a commitment to proactively manage and improve the climate and broader environmental footprint of this investment programme. This position plays a key role in enabling and supporting the delivery of interventions that will set Kāinga Ora up to successfully:

  • Minimise carbon pollution from our urban development/ housing activities
  • Deliver climate resilient communities
  • Enable transport systems and networks serving our homes support low carbon and healthy transport choices
  • Protect and enhance biodiversity surrounding our housing
  • Minimise development waste

As Senior Sustainability Advisor you will:

Work across a number of the exciting programmes of work we have in our pipeline, such as:

  • Preparing the inaugural Kāinga Ora Emissions Reduction Plan, which will include pragmatic approaches to significantly reducing emissions associated with our corporate activity, housing construction and portfolio and land development and infrastructure construction work.
  • Supporting our strategy and construction teams with delivering the biggest improvement in building standards for residential housing ever attempted in New Zealand.
  • Delivering New Zealand's first low carbon urban regeneration project in collaboration with Kāinga Ora urban development and consultancy teams

The work you will do:

  • Provide high-quality strategic guidance in delivering organisation wide sustainability activities/ interventions
  • Support or lead the delivery of key sustainability projects including strategic planning, development of funding/ budget proposals and business cases, procurement and management of consultants
  • Establish and leverage internal and external relationships to support delivery of the sustainability outcomes/ objectives
  • Support development of implementation and benefits management frameworks to assist in the delivery, monitoring and ongoing success of sustainability interventions
  • Contribute to thought leadership and market intelligence for the organisation and within the New Zealand Government

Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu - What you will bring

In adding to your relevant tertiary qualification in a public policy or business administration related discipline, you will also demonstrate:

  • Understanding of and passion for solving sustainability, climate change and other environmental related issues and opportunities
  • Knowledge of urban design, urban development, construction, asset management and/ or investment management (don't be put off if you don't have all of these)
  • Excellent communication and decision making skills, proven ability to influence decision making through clear written, presentation and verbal articulation of ideas
  • Proactive, motivated, driven and willing to learn from mistakes
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proven commitment to relationship building
  • Strong writing skills including experience in producing high quality documents and reports
  • Proven commercial experience in making decisions, balancing trade-offs and negotiating
  • Ability to analyse quantitative and qualitative data to drive strategic objectives
  • Strong project management skills and proven ability to proactively manage workload to achieve deadlines
