Job Description

This role is forms part of the Engagement team and will be closely connected into the wider Public Engagement and Communications business unit. Building on existing engagement, the role will contribute to an effective and equitable response to COVID-19 by facilitating engagement with iwi, and Māori partners. It will also help ensure the work of the COVID-19 Group responds to the needs of Māori by ensuring a Māori/Crown relationship lens is brought to the work of the Communications and Public Engagement team.

The key focus areas of the role will be to:

  • Continue to strengthen relationships with partners including key government agencies (e.g. Ministry of Health Māori Health Directorate, Te Puni Kōkiri, Te Arawhiti) and iwi and Māori partners and networks (e.g. Iwi Communications Collective) to facilitate a co-ordinated and collaborative approach to COVID-19 related communication and engagement activities.
  • Work across the wider communications team and to bring a Māori/Crown relationship lens to the development and delivery of strategic communications, campaign, web and social media activity.
  • Facilitate the involvement of iwi and Māori partners in the development and delivery of communications and engagement approaches and outputs that meet the needs of iwi, hapÅ«, and whānau Māori.
  • Help ensure that all communications and engagement activities undertaken by the Communications and Public Engagement Team give effect to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.
  • Facilitate the distribution of COVID-19 messages and communications material that responds to the needs of, and can be adapted by, iwi and Māori partners to ensure their communities are informed. This includes supporting the development and delivery of information in Te Reo Māori and accessible formats as required.

Ko wai koe | About you 

We select on capability and welcome a wide range of applications where the candidate can demonstrate the following:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification, or at least 5 years' experience, in engagement, communications or a similar discipline.
  • Experience at building and sustaining good strategic relationships with government agencies, Iwi and Māori partners and key stakeholder groups
  • Competency of Māori/Crown relationships and a degree of fluency in te reo Māori

Advantageous to the role:

  • Experience in working with iwi, Māori organisations and or Māori communities
  • Having work experience in the health sector
  • A strong foundation in Māori communications and engagement
