About the job
At Google, research-focused Software Engineers are embedded throughout the company, allowing them to setup large-scale tests and deploy promising ideas quickly and broadly. Ideas may come from internal projects as well as from collaborations with research programs at partner universities and technical institutes all over the world.
From creating experiments and prototyping implementations to designing new architectures, engineers work on real-world problems including artificial intelligence, data mining, natural language processing, hardware and software performance analysis, improving compilers for mobile platforms, as well as core search and much more. But you stay connected to your research roots as an active contributor to the wider research community by partnering with universities and publishing papers.
Weather impacts users, businesses, and many Google products. It also influences everything from how we plan our day to how we survive in a changing climate. With vast amounts of collected data from diverse sources such as radar stations, geostationary satellites, and user input, predicting the weather is a planet-scale problem. Our team aims to accelerate the transition to AI-based weather forecasts by pursuing research and enabling product development. Our approach uses machine learning to cast the weather with greater resolution (e.g., space and time) and accuracy that existing physics-based models.
As a Research Engineer, you will work with data ingestion and understand excellent ML research to create a solution that can affect all users.
Google Research is building the next generation of intelligent systems for all Google products. To achieve this, we’re working on projects that utilize the latest computer science techniques developed by skilled software engineers and research scientists. Google Research teams collaborate closely with other teams across Google, maintaining the flexibility and versatility required to adapt new projects and foci that meet the demands of the world's fast-paced business needs.
Responsibilities
Develop, deploy, and improve the weather forecast model.
Ingest planet-scale weather datasets, including radar, satellite, and ground stations.
Train and test ML models at scale on Google infrastructure.
Innovate model architectures in order to improve performance.
Work with Product teams in Search and across Alphabet to deploy improved weather predictions in Google products.
