POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Integrated Stroke Unit (ISU) is a specialized unit on D wing of CCC, which is dedicated to providing acute and rehabilitative care for all types of stroke patients. The patient will remain on the same unit, in the same bed, surrounded by health team members with expertise in stroke care to help them through their journey.

The RPN is responsible for establishing therapeutic relationships with stroke patients and their families through application of specialized knowledge, skill and judgment, both in assessing health needs and in planning, implementing and evaluating patient care based on evidence and Stroke Best Practice standards.

HOURS:

Must be available for 11.25 and 7.5 hour tours, and other tours as assigned by the hospital, 24 hour rotation, seven (7) days per week.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

• Registered Practical Nurse, currently registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario;
• Graduate of a recognized College program or education and experience that allows the RPN to practice at full scope;
• An energetic, compassionate person who demonstrates an interest in working with stroke patients.
• Certified medication administration including an approved medication administration course within the last five (5) years, and successful completion of the medication administration orientation process
• Proven assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation skills related to medical nursing with the ability to assess changing situations and respond accordingly;
• Proven ability to work independently, utilizing effective organizational skills in a changing environment; ability to work with the multi-disciplinary team is also required.
• Basic computer skills (Outlook, Electronic Patient Record)
• Excellent performance and attendance record.

CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIRED:

Note – Preference will be given to candidates that already possess the training listed below:

• Best Practices: Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Strokes
• NIHSS Certification
• Alpha FIM Certification
• Acute and Rehab Stroke Unit Orientation
