Prior to the pandemic, visitors to public conservation lands had reached record numbers. In response, DOC is using strategic, long-term planning and innovative approaches to help create sustainable and exceptional visitor experiences whilst protecting our cultural and heritage values, taonga and special landscapes.

As a result, we have a unique opportunity for a Regional Visitor Planner to join our Heritage and Visitors Team. The team takes a lead role in regional destination planning and shaping how international and local visitors can engage with our natural and cultural heritage in Aotearoa.

He angitūtanga : About the Role

As Regional Visitor Planner, you will work on a broad range of projects that will involve a mix of technical, analysis and long-term strategic planning.

Working alongside senior regional planners, operations, and technical advisory teams, you will use data driven insights to inform strategic planning decisions for visitors and nature.

Working in collaboration with whānau, hapu and iwi, you will focus national priority destinations and support work in places such as Milford Sound, South Westland and Te Manahuna Aoraki based projects.

He kōrero mōu : What we are looking for :

The role requires strong analytical and conceptual thinking, coupled with the ability to implement strategy into operational reality.

Ideally, you will have a background in sustainable management or recreation planning.

Drawing on your experience in spatial planning and development of long-term plans, you will be comfortable providing advice on visitor / recreation management within natural settings.

You will also have demonstrated ability to work within complex project environments, and experience engaging with whānau, hapu and iwi, as well as communities.

To be considered for the role you will have :

  • Senior level spatial planning skills learnt from real world planning experience
  • Experience developing strategic plans with a long-term vision, objectives and benefits
  • Proven ability to build and leverage trusted relationship skills to work collaboratively with other organisations such as local authorities
  • Advanced understanding of visitor management within protected areas
  • Strong ability to generate innovative and sustainable solutions through working with others
  • Experience engaging and working in partnership with whānau, hapu and iwi
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and facilitate complex project and workshops
  • Current driver's license

The role will be predominantly officed based, with field visits as required.

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.

Salary Range $72,610-92,000. Starting salary of the successful candidate will be based on their relevant skills and experience.
