 He angitÅ«tanga | About the role 

As a Ranger, Biodiversity you will be joining our talented Biodiversity team carrying out critical natural heritage conservation work programmes across the district.

While you will be actively working across a range of different projects, a key focus for the role will be in the planning and delivery of pest animal control programmes utilising a range of methods including trapping, shooting and toxins.

Other projects include:

  • plant pest control
  • ecosystem protection and restoration
  • threatened species management
  • conservation law compliance
  • stakeholder engagement

 Your day to day work will take you across the district, carrying out biodiversity work on and off public conservation land, according to work plans.

Your skills and experience in natural heritage work will see you not only doing conservation work but also teaching, coaching, supporting and/or overseeing Rangers, community groups and volunteers doing conservation work in the field. 

Ngā pÅ«kenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience 

Someone who is comfortable working in the field or in the office and wants to make a difference for conservation in South Canterbury.

Ideally you will have proven experience in some or all of the following:

  • Pest plant and animal control (including using toxins)
  • Planning and organisational skills, with attention to detail and commitment to achieving team objectives
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances when organising work programs
  • Physically fit and willing to work in the field when required
  • Good back country skills
  • Contractor management
  • Farm fencing repair and maintenance skills
  • Compliance activities
  • A current full drivers licence
  • Ability to interpret GIS information, produce maps and use hand held GPS devices and/or smart phone apps

 Desired:

  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Current Light Utility Vehicle and/or 4WD vehicle qualifications
  • Current Growsafe Standard Certificate
  • Current firearms licence (A category)
