He angitūtanga | About the Role


The Ngā Whenua Rāhui Team is looking for exceptional staff members to deliver biodiversity monitoring work within the ÅŒpōtiki and Gisborne Districts. You will provide specialist skills and experience for the operational delivery of  biodiversity monitoring programmes on whenua Māori with a Ngā Whenua Rāhui formal protection agreement. This will entail a significant allocation of fieldwork to collect biodiversity monitoring data from a wide range of sites and projects plus providing office based advice when requested. You will be part of a national team and may have responsibilities that extend beyond the location where you reside.  Put simply, these are specialist technical monitoring roles that involve a large proportion of time in the field across many different sites. 

We have two positions available.  Depending on the preference of the successful candidates these would be located in or near ÅŒpōtiki or Gisborne regions. These are permanent full-time positions that will require some work away from home for up to 10 days at a time.

 

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

  • Proven ability operating in the backcountry, communicating effectively and getting on well with others
  • Physically fit and capable of working in some rugged environments
  • A range of biodiversity monitoring experience
  • Able to regularly spend long periods of time (up to 10 days) away from home
  • Current full New Zealand Drivers Licence is desirable
  • Computer skills with confidence in Excel and Word
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal

Specialist skills and experience within one or more of the following areas is desirable:

  • Experience in 20 x 20 plot measurement,
  • Plant identification,
  • Bird identification, preferably 5 minute bird counts
  • Animal pest monitoring, preferably ungulate pellet counts and possum monitoring
  • Ability to interpret GIS information and use data loggers/GPS units
  • A tertiary qualification or equivalent experience and achievements in science or natural heritage management are desirable.
  • Have a strong understanding and appreciation for the values of tikanga and kawa when working with landowners, whānau/hapÅ«.
