With these positions working at Torness Station, your will be responsible for delivering the required standards and processes in Radiological Protection and Environmental Protection. This ensures the safe and reliable operation of the nuclear power plant in accordance with all regulations and licences and in compliance with the requirements of regulating bodies, company business strategies and industry best practices.

Your starting point will be either operational radiological protection or radioactive waste and discharges depending on your experience.

What you’ll be doing 

As an Accredited Health Physicist or Radioactive Waste Adviser, your responsibilities will include:

  • Specification of radiological protection precautions in support of operations, maintenance and outage activities
  • Provision of technical advice and oversight of the site’s arrangements for the assessment of radiation doses, the management of radiological monitoring instrumentation, the management of protective clothing and equipment, for control of radioactive material and for radioactive material movement and transport
  • Managing the arrangements for the accumulation, storage and disposal of solid radioactive wastes
  • Provision of technical advice and oversight of the site arrangements for the monitoring, assessment and reporting of liquid and gaseous discharges
  • Development and delivery of radiological protection and environmental training
  • Interaction with external regulators such as the Office for Nuclear Regulation and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency
  • You will be required to participate in the nuclear emergency scheme and will receive suitable remuneration for this.

 

Who you are

You will be qualified to a minimum of HNC (or equivalent) in a science or engineering discipline. Experience in radiological protection or radioactive waste is an advantage. You will have a full driving licence.

Essential competencies to perform this role include:

  • The ability to clearly communicate technical information and build relationships with a range of internal customers/stakeholders across the power station and wider company.
  • The ability to work cooperatively within a team whilst taking personal responsibility for actions and driving them to completion.
  • Proven ability to work safely and to organise self and others, to work flexibly to deliver against a mix of short- and longer-term targets, and to identify improvements to existing methods and procedures.
  • The successful candidate will be trained using on site and off-site formal training courses and a process of mentoring for the tasks required. The individual, with support of the Group Head and mentors, is responsible for driving their training programme to achieve timely completion. The opportunity to pursue appointment as a Radiation Protection Adviser or join the site’s Radioactive Waste Adviser body will be available.
