Job Description

Collins Aerospace is seeking a customer-facing, Principal Systems Engineer to work on a number of existing projects, focused on Autonomy and Unmanned Air Systems, such as Future Combat Air System (Part of the Tempest programme), LANCA (Lightweight Affordable Novel Combat Aircraft), amongst others.

Based at our modern, superbly equipped Winnersh facility, we offer an excellent package including Flexible and Hybrid working to balance business needs with personal preference.

The projects and customers Collins Aerospace interface with are at an early stage in its lifecycle, so requires someone who is comfortable to start defining a system from the very first principles. They need to be an excellent communicator and be able to present to both customers and internal stakeholders at the appropriate level. A Model Based Systems Engineering Approach is being used and Cameo is the tool that is being used to capture this, interfacing to Doors where the requirements are being stored. The team utilise an Agile methodology when developing against these projects.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the identification of cutting edge and future technologies and the definition of technology roadmaps

  • Definition and development of the CONEMP and CONOPS for the mission system as well providing support to the overall system Operational Analysis at a system of systems level

  • Support the provision of Autonomous System architectural technical expertise in design reviews and other forums

  • Collaboration with Resource Management as required to assign relevant technical work tasks to suitably qualified and experienced personnel

  • Act a Technical Mentor to deliver high quality technical output to contracted time, cost and quality and support the wider team

  • To provide Systems Engineering (processes, methods and tools) technical guidance that meets current and future Engineering and business objectives working as a partnership with Business Development and Programme Management

  • Effective capture and analysis of Customer requirements to generate System Requirements • Co-ordinating technical aspects of bids including delivery planning and estimates; generating innovative technical/solutions with an associated work breakdown structure

  • Ensuring the production of appropriate Technical Delivery Plans and adherence throughout the engineering project lifecycle

  • Identifying project technical risks and mitigations

Key Skills / Proven Ability:

  • Significant Systems Engineering practitioner capability across the entire lifecycle, particularly early-stage concept thinking

  • Ability to define and develop requirements in an uncertain domain

  • Ability to research and evaluate potential methods of implementation and create reports to capture the benefits and drawbacks of each option and to create technical documentation of system solution.

  • Capable of scoping the engineering stages for the full lifecycle of a product

  • Autonomous system analysis/modelling/simulation tools

It would be of benefit to have knowledge of any of the following:

  • Airborne system architecture

  • Aerospace system integration

  • Aerospace and communications standards and certification

  • Aerospace systems engineering approach as defined in ARP4761, ARP4754, RTCA DO-254, RTCA DO-178, RTCA DO-362

  • Engineering lifecycle and associated business processes

  • System modelling - SYSML

  • Definition and elicitation of system and sub system requirements

  • Networking and security functions

  • Airspace integration

  • Communication Systems , Datalinks (e.g. Link 16), Networks and Protocols

  • Supporting development and retention of a ‘world-class’ technical capability and expertise across a range of solutions

Essential:

  • Recognised aerospace qualification to at least HND standard

  • Good team player with good customer facing presence

  • Ability to work well under pressure

  • Evidence of further learning and relevant training in air systems and engineering.

  • Excellent coaching and communication skills

  • Experience of applying system engineering toolsets and paradigms such as IBM DOORS, MBSE, V & V, etc.

  • Ability to make sound judgements on integrated engineering solutions

  • Sound knowledge of engineering governance including aerospace certification and regulation

  • Knowledge of the military and civil aerospace industry

Desirable Criteria:

  • Engineering degree

  • Chartered Engineer

  • Knowledge of the UK MOD customer and MOD Procurement process

  • Knowledge of MAA RA1220

  • Knowledge and experience of applying EASA Part 21

  • Experience in developing aerospace technology Knowledge and experience of MAA DAOS
