About this role

In order to enable BT’s ambitious plans for its Consumer function to be successful and to enable new and innovative uses of data to deliver bold new services to consumers across a broad range of verticals, it will require a skilled and experienced principal lawyer who understands how to bring expertise, knowledge and creative solutions around privacy issues to support the Consumer CFU. 

At a high level the Principal Lawyer – Consumer Data is responsible for advising Consumer on how to develop innovative consumer propositions. Drafting and negotiating complex data protection aspects of contractual documentation with key strategic partners, and suppliers in support of Consumer’s activities. You will build strategic relationships between the Consumer Data Legal Team, Consumer, Consumer CIO and CDO and other key stakeholders (e.g. Security, Procurement, Compliance etc.) to drive successful implementation of Consumer’s activities and enabling cross-team collaboration in support of Consumer objectives. 

You will be tasked with providing specialist and strategic legal advice in support of all Consumer activities, esp. including digital advertising, TV strategy, customer marketing, customer permissions strategy, APIs, identity, complex escalated customer disputes

You'll have the following responsibilities

Building strong working relationships across Consumer, the Data & Digital Legal Team, and with other key stakeholders to ensure operational synergies and legal & regulatory compliance for Consumer activities 

Providing Consumer with high quality, practical and timely advice around how to structure and implement key Consumer customer proposiions and initiatives (increasingly across new verticals) from a data perspective

Drafting and negotiating complex data protection aspects of contracts with key strategic partners - striking an appropriate balance between risk and opportunity

Advising Consumer in a clear and practical manner concerning issues arising across the range of Consumer propositions and including TV, digital advertising, identity, customer marketing, new verticals (e.g. healthcare, security), complex escalated customer disputes, customer permissions strategy

Providing guidance, knowhow and training as appropriate to Consumer CFU on relevant aspects of data protection law and practice and evolving  guidance and case law in the space

Working with CIO and compliance and assurance Colleagues to provide appropriate guidance on data compliance and governance initiatives

Proactively responding to regulatory and governmental data-related consultations in order to further the interests of Consumer

Drafting and maintaining various Consumer related privacy notices

Drafting DPIAs for large complex projects and assisting first line PIA review team with escalated complex PIAs

You'll have the following skills & experience

Ability to take a nuanced, innovative and risk-based approach to data protection issues, providing the business with options and helping to find creatives solutions to challenges

Ability to draft and negotiate complex data protection aspects of key strategic partner agreements 

Experience advising senior stakeholders on complex legal issues

Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills with the ability to communicate effectively with the highest levels of management and decision-makers within the organization

Experience in keeping abreast of policy and regulatory issues and responding to consultations

Experience of working across multiple business functions, in particular: Technology, Security, Risk & Compliance

Qualified lawyer

4+ years of experience as a data protection lawyer
