Mō te tÅ«nga | About the role

This role sits within the Māori Pathways Programme, which is part of the DCE Māori group.  The DCE Māori group encompasses several key business areas, including: Policy, Reintegration & Housing, Research & Analysis, Māori Strategy & Partnerships, Psychology & Programmes and Māori Pathways.

Māori Pathways is a major change programme supporting the corrections system to be more effective by using kaupapa Māori and whānau-centred approaches. The Programme is a significant enabler to bringing the department's strategy, Hōkai Rangi, to life within the Corrections and wider Justice Sector context. This Programme reports through to the People Portfolio, which is one of three portfolios managing and driving change across Corrections.

As the Principal Communications Adviser you will drive communication across the programme, with a focus on our Frontline staff right through to high profile external stakeholders. You will support key projects that deliver on Corrections Māori Pathways Programme goals and foresee the future experiences we will deliver, enabling you to be strategic in driving, planning, and creating content that is relevant and interesting. You will establish and maintain relationships with iwi and other groups, champion the role of communications as a key tool in keeping all internal and external stakeholders up to date when it comes to the Māori Pathways Programme. You will identify issues that present communication risks or opportunities and create content (written, video or social media) that engages and communicates key initiatives, milestones, change or other important events happening throughout the Māori Pathways Programme.

Mōu | About you

To be successful in this role you will be able to pro-actively drive communications for a large programme of work.  Your skills set will enable you to be able to manage high profile communications. You will have strong stakeholder engagement skills and be able to identify communication opportunities, including identifying any potential risks and issues. You will also be able to manage a diverse portfolio of tasks and have some knowledge and an understanding of te Ao Māori worldview and the Treaty of Waitangi.

As an individual you will have a passion for creative communication, enjoy building relationships and be able to work independently or as a member of a close-knit team. You will have a solid understanding of the public sector and machinery of government and have extensive knowledge and expertise of communications planning principals and media engagement theory and practice.

A relevant tertiary qualification is desired.

Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role.
