Purpose of Role:
The role holder qualifies and manages bids of a complex and/or high-risk nature (typically complex, solutions and multi-vendor designs) from initial qualification to successful acceptance by the customer. The role also requires coaching of other Bid Managers and ownership and development of bid governance, tools and processes to ensure a successful outcome for the team as a whole
The Principal Bid Manager is responsible for:
- To effectively manage a virtual team in bid activities.
- To be fully conversant with O2’s Systems, Sales Governance and Processes, as applicable
- Develop efficient and effective bid tools and governance processes
- To take lead responsibility for complex high value and strategic bids, manage bid/proposal delivery and the associated resources, and act as the single accountable point of contact.
- To continually qualify sales opportunities
- To create the Win Plan for sales opportunities
- To use resources as necessary to support bid proposals including other bid teams.
- To apply commercial knowledge to contribute to the build and model costs and prices and evaluate risk and potential.
- Will expertly use several bid management tools and techniques (for risk, cost, pricing, qualification, planning, proposal production etc) in support of all bid activities.
- To form and lead the bid team, coordinating all bid activity through the application of standard procedures and the bid plan.
- To coordinate win strategy, technical design, project management, commercial input, authorisation and formal document production and negotiations at senior levels, within customer and supplier environments.
- To coordinate all resources as necessary to support proposal production.
- To protect and grow O2’s business with customers.
- Develop and manage the interface with suppliers both internal and external for the purpose of producing winning bids.
- Will attend customer meetings providing support to the sales team.
- Coaching of other bid team members
Authority/Decision Making:
- Assumes a broad perspective.
- Makes day-to-day management decisions to keep the bid on track.
- Works with a high level of autonomy with an ability to handle many streams of information and formulate an opinion and judgement on this information.
- Manages identified risks and develops strategies to reduce the impact of these risks.
- Acts as bid issue escalation point and is responsible for resolution management.
- Manages and creates multiple internal relationships and manages conflicting interests to a successful outcome with diplomacy
Qualifications:
- Relevant career experience
- Relevant Professional Qualification – Association of Proposal Management Professionals (APMP)
Skills & Experience:
- Proven relevant experience with knowledge of O2’s systems, sales governance, processes and regulatory environment.
- Appreciation of the relevant technical or commercial background issues, able to understand technical solutions and to question the proposed design.
- Methodology skills deploying project management principles.
- Able to handle multiple bids simultaneously.
- Proven track record at a senior level, able to influence at a senior level.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a capacity to develop and mentor Bid Managers.
- Leadership acumen and a strong sense of accountability and ownership
Additional responsibilities
- To ensure compliance with (and completion of CBTs) Competition Law, Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Health and Safety, Instinctively Inclusive, GDPR, Safety & You, Security at Work, Sustainability and Telefonica Business Principles
- To be the point of contact (Sales Engagement) for a sales team/s, and be the point of contact for bid related matters and queries
- To contribute to the continuous improvement of the bid management function, through the delivery improvement initiatives
