Ko tā te Te Arawhiti - The Office for Māori Crown Relations – he poipoi i te whanaungatanga, he whakapūmau hoki i te noho pai o te iwi Māori me te Kāwanatanga. Hei tohu tō mātou ingoa mō te arawhata i waenga i te ao Māori me te Karauna, ngā rā kua huri ki tua, ngā rā kei mua o te aroaro, te ahunga mai i ngā nawe tawhito, ki te mahi kōtui.

Ko te kaupapa o Te Arawhiti he mahi kia piki te tū o te Karauna hei hoa kōtui Tiriti, - kia tautuhi anō, kia whāngai, kia waihanga i te piringa o te iwi Māori raua ko te Karauna, kia kīa ai he kōtuitanga hoa Tiriti tūturu.

Te Arawhiti is the Office for Māori Crown Relations and is dedicated to fostering strong, ongoing and effective relationships with Māori across Government. The kaupapa of Te Arawhiti is to make the Crown a better partner, enabling effective engagement with Māori to realise the true promise of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to support relationships not focused on grievance but on a journey of partnership. The focus of Te Arawhiti is to complete historical Treaty settlements, to ensure commitments in Treaty settlements endure, and to improve public sector capability and Māori-Crown relations.

Every day is different: you might engage with iwi or Māori entities on their aspirations, lead complex projects or workstreams, and draft reports to Ministers. We're looking for people with knowledge of te ao Māori, Ministerial and Cabinet processes, and with excellent relationship management and problem-solving skills.

He pūkenga tou/Skills and Experience

We're looking for motivated, talented and hard-working Principal Advisors to join us. We have roles available within:

  • Te Kāhui Whakatau – responsible for negotiating settlements of historical Treaty of Waitangi claims; and
  • Te Kāhui Whakamana – ensuring the durability of Treaty settlements and supporting settlements to enable future partnerships between iwi and the Crown.

To be successful in the Principal Advisor role, you'll have an extensive career ideally with an understanding of te reo me ngā tikanga Māori, and a background in Te Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi, legal, and/or natural resources. You will have demonstrated ability working across agencies to achieve results.

The Office for Māori Crown Relations - Te Arawhiti

We're a Crown agency dedicated to fostering strong, ongoing and effective relationships with Māori across government. In addition to work of the Kāhui listed above, we do this by engaging with applicants under the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act and the Ngā Rohe Moana o Ngā Hapū o Ngāti Porou Act (Te Kāhui Takutai Moana), and improving the health of the Māori Crown relationship (Te Kāhui Hīkina). Te Hāpai Ō Strategy, Policy and Legal work with us to develop policy and strategic advice, and provide legal advice.

Salary Range: The appointing salary for this role will be between $116,741 and $152,450 based on skills and experience.
