Job Introduction

BBCNI are currently recruiting for an Operations Manager to support our Award Winning News Team.  

This role specifically sits within Technology Operations and is the day-to-day liaison with News for all their technical and operational requirements as well as delivering cost-effective solutions to meet their strategic needs 

The BBC leads the world in digital broadcasting and BBC Northern Ireland has made a major contribution to that development along with the introduction of state-of-the-art production, editing, transmission and business reporting systems. This has been made possible by the expertise of our integrated technology and operations groups combined with a strong, professional management team. BBC NI is a national broadcaster producing a full range of award-winning programmes for Television, Radio and Online for both Network and Regional output.

 

Role Responsibility

Your main responsibilities will include;

  • Management of the Newsroom Hub and SNG Operations and staff
  • Working closely with production teams in the planning and coordination of technical and operational requirements around Hub and SNG operations
  • Assisting News in the selection, development and ultimate deployment of new technologies and workflows for newsgathering and production
  • Advising on and being responsible for the setup and operation of ad hoc technical facilities for news events including supervision of the technical team as required
  • Ensuring that video and audio technical standards through the production chains are within agreed specifications and escalate any issues arising
  • Having oversight of relationships with third-party providers such as remote Studios, Control Rooms, Media Hubs and Outside Broadcaster

Whilst News is the primary customer these operations also serve other production groups and the post holder will have to ensure their needs are met and that resources are prioritised accordingly.

The Ideal Candidate

  • You will have extensive knowledge of TV and Radio operations and the wide range of systems involved in Newsgathering (ideally) or Studios and Outside Broadcasts. This might include video and audio signals routing and processing, communications systems, IP contribution and news (digital) production systems.
  • You have experience in managing operational resources in a demanding media environment.
  • You will have experience in translating production requirements into daily operational decisions or longer-term cost-effective solutions all while engaging your interpersonal skills.
  • You will have the attributes of a Team Leader, these attributes would enable you to support staff well-being and development. You will also have or are keen to expand your knowledge of HR issues in line with policies and regulations.
  • You are experienced with up-to-date computer-driven broadcast technologies and in particular with newsroom production systems.
  • You will have a knowledge of local and inter-regional baseband and IP circuit routing and control systems and processes as well as file-based content delivery technologies.
  • Along with the above, you will also have an understanding of UK Health & Safety regulations and experience of safe working practices in office and Outside Broadcast environments, this should include the relevant Electricity at Work requirements.
