About this role

This role is essential to the in-life management of the Openreach network.  You will be part of the Network Technical Support  management team and wider CTIO directorate that leads on the development and deployment of new technologies, as well as sustaining legacy networks, to provide service reliability, network efficiency and continuous support and improvement of the UK broadband Ethernet and Optical infrastructure development.   

You will be part of a team that manages its investment budget in order to successfully test, deliver and install network components and upgrade programmes (Technical, Operational Change Management). This role will help to deliver ongoing productivity improvements to ensure that the costs of managing a growing network are well controlled enabling future investments.

You'll have the following responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the network testing and fulfilment team comprising of regular  or offshore contractor staff across multi locations in a right sourcing model
  • Develop staff to adopt new ways of working such as Agile, Ci/CD automation tooling and software driven network implementation approach. Set up necessary processes and governance to ensure high standard of network test quality, event-less fulfilment in production and timely delivery of projects
  • Work with design and delivery teams on testing and development activities related to the Openreach Ethernet, Optical, VDSL and PON network. 
  • Actively engage with the team, Technical and business stakeholders to understand project requirements, build resourcing roadmap, and ramp up or ramp down the team as appropriate. 
  • Continuous improvement – Always striving to identify opportunities and develop cost reduction and revenue generation initiatives. 
  • Provide faster and improved decision making through cross team collaboration (collision and collaboration effect)
  • Enhanced communication and performance understanding through the convergence of functions
  • Optimise prioritisation of fixes based upon impact and probability and automation.
  • Work in conjunction with  the service and platform reliability teams to introduce new working practices brought about by technological innovations that will move the operational management of the openreach network to match the current trend seen within the industry
  • Drive initiatives in conjunction with the service and platform reliability teams and wider stakeholder teams.

You'll have the following skills & experience

  • In depth  knowledge of VDSL, PON, Ethernet Optical network components, vendors and processes.
  • Good understanding of service provider Telco network technologies
  • Proven experience in setting up testing practices, testing strategy and solid understanding of variety of testing is a crucial requirement.
  • Good understanding of NetDevOps tools and technologies such as Source control ( GIT), Continuous Integration, Deployment automation and orchestration (Jenkins,Kubernetes), Containers (Docker), Infrastructure automation (Puppet, Ansible). (Desirable)
  • Data & cloud-based skills such as MYSQL, Haddop, Linux, GCP/AWS/Azure familiarity 
  • Experienced in leading large service provider network engineering teams comprising of network test engineers and delivery engineers 
  • Proven stakeholder engagement, relationship building, leadership, reporting, supplier management skills
  • Excellent Technical, service and operational knowledge and experience plus good problem solving abilities  
  • Excellent skills to create/build optimal technical plans and an eye for the detail.
  • Strong Customer focus, anticipates what adds value to the customer and strives to improve service quality.
