Our mission is to break down the barriers of today to release the potential of tomorrow. Join us today and release yours.
There are two things that we want to share with anyone considering joining us.
Firstly, we’ve got big ambitions for our colleagues and the future of the organisation. These include our vision that inclusion and accessibility drive every conversation we have and every decision we make. We want our workforce to fully represent the communities and customers we serve, because a diverse business is a better business. We value every colleague, their diversity and the contribution that they make. When we say you’re welcome at BT, we really mean it.
Secondly, the one thing the pandemic has taught us is that a lot of current and future colleagues, where and when possible, want to embrace hybrid working. Therefore, we are introducing smart working at BT. Smart working means having the flexibility to choose, as a team, how and where you work depending on your team’s deliverables and needs; when you are at your shared core location to connect with others and when not. It may not be for every role, and, as part of the recruitment process, you’ll have the chance to discuss smart working and how it might work for the job you are applying for.
About this role
I’m Neil and I’m in need of some expertise. I run design for the biggest IP MPLS network in the UK and I want to embrace all the goodness of agile projects and software engineering to help my team be even more effective.
We’ve been dipping our toes in the waters of coding for a while but I recognise there’s a big difference between hacking out a script and the discipline it takes to be a professional software engineer.
I’m looking for someone to help me implement modern best practice of things like version control, test driven development, and continuous deployment as I embark of shifting my organisation into DevOps mode.
I’m not just after an adviser here, I’m after a do-er, someone with experience that’s willing to make things happen and help coach people and persuade them to adopt new approaches.
If you’re an experienced engineer who wants to share their knowledge and help shape the future for a huge national infrastructure then get in touch!
You'll have the following responsibilities
We do a bit of coding at the moment, but your challenge will be to ensure we have the right processes in place to design, create and deploy robust code.
Be a role model – help bring the junior members of the team on their technical journey to being effective engineers through coaching and development
Help bring the software mindset into our network infrastructure programmes, helping experienced engineers with limited software exposure understand the benefits of test driven development, and DevOps working.
Lead on one or more key projects to deliver new features or consolidate our network.
You'll have the following skills & experience
I want someone that oozes authenticity, a techy that other techies will look up to and respect because they know what they’re talking about and have the scars and anecdotes to back it up!
Someone that has worked in a professional software engineering role for a number of years, and is competent in developing object-oriented Python projects.
You’ll be working on the heart of BT’s network so being from the telco sector will enhance your application, particularly if you’re conversant in IP, routing protocols, MPLS and network management.
In the network space we’re building a lot of our configurations in TOSCA/Yaml and Yang, so knowledge of these languages would be great, but as long as you’d be confident picking them up quickly a full working experience isn’t necessary.
I need a great communicator and persuader for this role, it’s not “just†[sic] a head-down programmer that I’m after, I need someone to help me bring others on the journey of change that we’re going on. So you’ll need to be comfortable meeting people, encouraging them to try new things and explaining rationale with enthusiasm.
Working as part of a team is key, while you’ll undoubtedly be the subject matter expert, no engineer is an island so you’ll need to show you can achieve great things working with others.
KEY SKILLS:
Python – Competent programmer, able to debug complex issues and build OO applications.
Software Engineering – Experienced in current software engineering processes and concepts (e.g. IDE configuration (VSCode), version control systems (Git), Test Driven Development, Code Review, Code structure.
3. Crystal Clear Communications – Clear and concise, gets to the point, answers the question asked and leaves people thinking “I totally get it nowâ€!
Design thinking/solution approach – critical thinking, led by data and requirements, not by standard design patterns.
Always Learning/Always teaching – not afraid to get stuck into something new, and genuinely curious about new tech. Helps others improve their knowledge and breeds enthusiasm
