About this role

The role is working within BT core IP Voice Core Cloud Communications / Infrastructure teams. These teams are building BTs very latest generation of Voice Applications and Platforms. 

The teams are tasked with building a common central infrastructure hosted on BTs network cloud that supports all of BTs future Voice Services. The scope of work covers from concept working with product lines, through design, development and test to working with operational platform management teams. 

The Media Server / IVR Specialist Network Designer is a senior and essential role responsible for the design of our core voice platform and services, enabling rapid deployment underpinning new products.

You'll have the following responsibilities

Design leadership for BT’s New Strategic Media Server / IVR platform, and its interfaces to all other BT networks and systems. The new platform will be hosted directly connected to the BT VoIP SDIN Core network providing generic service capability to all connected platforms. Hosted within the Network Clouds.

Act as technical focal point to lead the migration of customers from legacy to strategic platforms

Represent BT’s technical capabilities to internal and external stakeholders, including customers, vendors and suppliers

Manage the technical interface to our major customers, leading technical presentations and discussing and agreeing new requirements.

Act as BT point of contact to downstream major customer requirements into the appropriate BT platforms and teams.

Drive e2e Service Design activities to ensure the overall service deliveries meet the expected scope, cost and quality. 

Take technical lead in resolution of any significant in-life service affecting issues . Resolve escalations.

Support bids as required to enable BT to win profitable revenue.

Ensure that designs are progressed in line with Delivery plan, and any issues are flagged to the Delivery manager. Support resolution of any issues to keep delivery on track.

Share knowledge and thought leadership to advance team’s thinking, guide technical decisions and provide strategic level recommendations on high profile customer solutions. Be an advanced user of design tools.  

Provide technical expertise to inform contract and commercial management.  Provide input to business cases and proposals for ways to avoid costs.

You will also be responsible for:

People

Lead larger matrix teams across Voice design, Service design, Technical Account Managers to ensure delivery and support of complex IPX developments

Cost

Driving efficiency and cost reduction through defining Brilliant and Simple requirements to the supplier and other BT systems

Quality

Ensuring rigorous and highly available solutions to underpin the highly available requirements of SDIN and our VoIP services. 

Delivery

Define and Deliver the strategy for the Media Server / IVR platform

Identify key business improvements and makes them happen

Application of Design best practise to domain, and interlock with design and delivery plans across all related systems and teams. 

You'll have the following skills & experience

The Media Server / IVR Specialist Network Designer will possess a thorough knowledge of Voice Products and Services, underpinning Networks, management OSS and technologies that interact with the core SDIN connected platform. They will also have a good understanding of associated standards and industry initiatives that relate to the existing service and its evolution. Other specifics for the role include a thorough knowledge of:

Application development lifecycles

SIP and H.248 protocols

Stakeholder and Vendor  Management – Ability to engage with Stakeholders and Vendors at an appropriate level to ensure necessary business results can be attained.

Problem solving – Proven ability to solve complex problems in a controlled and systematic manner, analysing the available data to make the correct business decisions taking responsible risks when appropriate.

Research and innovation - Examine many potential ideas and evaluate each one against our business goals. Provide guidance and expertise and coach others to investigate new information, and discover new insights and possibilities.

Coaching and Mentoring – Experience of coaching and mentoring others for peak performance

Financial Management – Understands overall cost to business for decisions made, has a good working knowledge of different types of budgets and inputs to business cases

Process improvement / Management – Works across teams to identify changes to processes and procedures to enable faster delivery or better business outcomes.

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to bring teams together across BT to look at business issues ranging from feasibility through to issues affecting live service.

Experience you would be expected to have:

Detailed Software development knowledge, including Network Virtualisation / Network Cloud knowledge

5 years + experience of complex core voice network design, including SBCs, Gateways, Routing and understanding of services running over the core network - MANDATORY

Thorough knowledge of SIP & H.248 signalling – MANDATORY

Thorough knowledge of other UK tier 1 carriers and their networks - PREFERRED

Test domain expert with broad experience of test design for SIP services - MANDATORY

Excellent Coaching Skills – MANDATORY

Proven record of delivering  projects to time, cost, quality requirements – MANDATORY

Excellent communication skills both verbal and written – MANDATORY
