This is an exciting opportunity to join New Zealand's internationally renowned environmental research organisation, and work as part of a progressive and innovative team. NIWA's vessels operate across New Zealand's Exclusive Economic Zone from the coast to the deep ocean and from Antarctica to the tropics

What we're looking for:

We are seeking a capable technician to provide technical and electronics support for our marine acoustic, seafloor mapping and imaging systems. This involves the maintenance, operation and development of a wide range of marine scientific instruments (such as seafloor mapping and geotechnical systems, fisheries sonar and measurement equipment, vessel positioning systems and underwater camera systems). Training will be provided for the maintenance and operation of these systems. As this position involves a component of field work, essentially carried out at sea, applicants must be able to spend extended periods of time (typically 2-3 weeks at a time) away from home.

What you will bring:

• The successful applicant will have a minimum of a New Zealand Diploma in Electronic Engineering (Level 6), or a similar relevant qualification or experience in electronics (e.g. equivalent training in electronics/electrics with the NZDF),
• You will have good computing skills and mechanical aptitude.
• You'll also be enthusiastic and amenable to learning skills across a broad range of scientific instrument systems with excellent communication and project management skills, be well-organised and responsive to project deadlines, be adept at problem solving and have the ability to effectively prioritise and work unsupervised.
• Seagoing experience is highly desirable but not essential.
