Te Mahau | Te Tai Runga (South)

Our teams around the country work closely with the Early Childhood and Schooling sectors, providers, and communities to provide support, expertise and resources to help children and young people reach their full potential.

About this role

The Manager Education will coordinate access to child-focused services to ensure all children achieve educational success. They will work with a diverse range of groups including parents, educators, Communities of Learning | Kāhui Ako, health professionals and other agencies to ensure that the right support is delivered at the right time to better support children and young people in need to achieve their educational goals. We are seeking an innovator that is committed to our inclusive approach to education and to achieving the best outcomes for our children every day.

The successful applicant will be a people leader and will have a proven track record in managing complex relationships through change. They will have extensive experience in managing service delivery from working in either the public, private, social or education sectors. This role is based in our Lower Hutt Office but will require travel around the Greater Wellington region.

As a Manager Education, you will play a critical role in our region's Leadership team by:

  • Leading the delivery of core Ministry services to early learning providers, schools, kura and their communities.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to Education Advisors to develop and deliver responsive services to early learning providers and schools.
  • Working with the Learning Support teams to support and lift educational achievement of all young people.
  • Work collaboratively with other Managers
  • Regional planning and integrating work programmes
  • Developing influential local connections and networks with iwi, communities and whānau to achieve priority outcomes for the region.

About you

We seek dynamic senior leaders who are committed to our inclusive approach to education, and to put the best outcomes for our children at the forefront of their work every day. An ability to apply a strategic and systems based approach and excellent operational skills will ensure success in this role.

Your track record of managing complex relationships through change and managing service delivery from a range of providers, including independent organisations, will equip you to work with others to develop a coherent, accessible system of support for children and young people.

To be successful you will have:

  • Educational sector experience or the ability to develop understanding quickly
  • Experience of leading and motivating teams
  • Sound understanding of Machinery of Government, public sector delivery structures and systems
  • Understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi and its implications for the work of the Ministry
  • Proven experience of building effective stakeholder engagement ‑ recognising the different needs and appropriate approach to working with different stakeholders
  • Proven ability to understand policy intent at an abstract level, identify the implications for operational policy and implementation
  • Ability to quickly identify and mitigate risks and manage strategic linkages with internal and external initiatives
  • Outcome-focused style of working
  • Great organisation and communication skills and ability to build effective relationships
