Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is recruiting a lecturer in Hydrology and Freshwater Resources to contribute to our teaching and research programmes in the School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences (SGEES). We are looking for an excellent team member, whose teaching and research interests complement and extend those of the existing team. Reflecting our location in Aotearoa New Zealand and Te Moananui a Kiwa and the Mātauranga from this region, we are looking for someone who works closely with Māori and / or Pasifika communities, and understands the importance of freshwater to these communities.

Key Responsibilities:

• Undertaking impactful research and scholarship:
• within and across the broad spectrum of the hydrological cycle and freshwater science and policy, including climate change impacts, te mana o te wai, freshwater quality, agricultural sustainability, flood risk modelling, geospatial analyses;
• that demonstrates ethical and reciprocal links with Māori and / or Pasifika communities;
• evidenced by a range of activities (e.g. building positive relationships with communities and relevant organisations, publishing in international and domestic journals, research funding);
• that engages productively with colleagues within and outside the University;
• that successfully attracts and supports research students into the discipline, School or Faculty.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

You will have a strong understanding of the significance and mana of water in Aotearoa New Zealand and its importance to Māori communities today and in the future. You will be skilled and experienced in assembling and manipulating field and remotely-sensed data that can inform applications across the hydrologic cycle. You should hold a PhD in hydrology or a closely related discipline and have a well-established research profile in these or related disciplines. You will be able to co-ordinate and develop undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Hydrology that contribute to our programmes in Geography, Environmental Science, Geography, Earth Science and Climate Change; draw upon your own expertise or networks to embed Mātauranga into these programmes where relevant; supervise postgraduate students; and pursue a dynamic programme of research related to freshwater and the hydrologic cycle.

You will be drawn by our capital city location and proximity to relevant government bodies, providing unique opportunities for staff and students to focus on national and global environmental policy issues. Of particular relevance to this position are our collaborative relationships with the National Institute for Water and Atmosphere (NIWA) and Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS Science). Both these Crown Research Institutes have major campuses in Wellington and this position offers exciting opportunities to further strengthen these productive inter-institutional relationships.

Within the School, you will be joining a dynamic team working across a broad spectrum of disciplines and programmes that challenge students to confront the big challenges and opportunities concerning human-environment interaction. Freshwater issues are central to many of these challenges and there is opportunity for collaboration and development across current and future research and teaching initiatives. Our team has demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, engaging with our communities, and is committed to public scholarship. This team and the various disciplines they represent are vital to the University’s reputation in the physical and social sciences. In terms of Performance Based Research Funding (PBRF), our Earth Sciences team of 44 staff, which is the largest across all New Zealand Universities and ranked first in Quality overall in the latest nationwide research evaluation exercise, whilst our Geography team is ranked second. Internationally, in the QS rankings, Earth (and Marine) Sciences at Victoria University of Wellington has been consistently placed in the 51-100 range in recent years and Geography 51-150.
