The Position

Based within the world-leading SHRIMP (Sensitive High Resolution Ion Microprobe) Group within the Research School of Earth Sciences, the Laboratory Analyst will create new calibrations for the analysis of light isotopes in geological materials. The main responsibilities of this role include calibrating a new multi-collector on SHRIMP-II for stable isotopes, and supporting analytical programs in the SHRIMP Laboratory in particular ensuring that undertakings to an AuScope and an Australian Research Council grant are met.

The Laboratory Analyst will operate a broad range of complex scientific equipment within the Laboratory, provide technical advice, and solve complex problems. They will support and train users, become proficient in high level operations and maintenance of the Laboratory facilities, and adhere to all ANU policies and procedures including those related to work health and safety, and equal opportunity.

The Person

To excel in this role you will have experience in geochemical analysis and evidence of an ability to contribute to technique development such as calibrations for light element isotope analysis. You will demonstrate:

  • A proven ability to diagnose faults and repair sophisticated laboratory equipment.
  • A drive for continuous improvement and for collection of high quality data.
  • A demonstrated ability to provide effective technical support to users and students
  • A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and concisely, and to work both independently with limited supervision and harmoniously in a team environment with a diverse range of people.
  • Strong organisational skills with a demonstrated ability to keep accurate records, prioritise tasks and exercise sound judgement to meet deadlines
