About the organisation

This NGO is a small Kaupapa Māori organisation, doing big things. They are all about inspiring change and inspiring Whānau. They offer free specialist counselling services to individuals, whānau and children addressing a wide range of issues from anxiety and coping strategies through to rape crisis and sexual abuse counselling. 

As soon as you walk into their premises in Hastings you'll feel calm, connections, support, aroha and a place of change and healing. You’ll be part of a team of around 20 who are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others.

  

About the job

  • Here you will work in collaboration with your colleagues to provide the services needed to increase self determination for people and communities and initiate a pathway to recovery for a caseload of whaiora/clients
  • In addition to counselling this could include support with social needs, advocacy, Police and court processes, seeking legal or medical advice
  • Using your professional knowledge and skills as well as a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach, you will assist people towards recovery and ensure that whaiora/clients receive the appropriate support needed in order to heal
  • You will also contribute to crisis support services - carrying the 24/7 phone on a rostered basis and providing emergency counselling, support and advocacy following a crisis
  • This position is Monday to Friday 8.30am - 5.00pm plus rostered on call. Over time once your caseload is built up there is an option to work a 40 hour, 4 day week.  We are also open to those preferring to work part time.

About you

  • A Registered Kaiwhakamarie / Counsellor to a recognised professional body ie: NZAC, NZCCA
  • Knowledge and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Tikanga and Te Reo Māori, and a commitment to cultural and  Kaupapa Māori values
  • You’ll bring a range of therapeutic interventions and approaches and be able to roll your sleeves up and get involved in anything. You will however be encouraged to work in your pÅ«manawa space (area of talent)
  • Sexual Harm, Trauma counselling skills and ACC registration is ideal (but not necessary - workforce development opportunities exist here)
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, enthusiasm, passion for your work
  • A collaborative team player
