About the team

The Youth Forensic team is a specialised out-patient service providing comprehensive assessment, treatment and / or referral support foryouth who are engaged in offending behaviours within the juvenile justice system and who are also experiencing alcohol or other drug problems, emotional and/or mental health disorders.We offer you a warm, pleasant working environment in a modern low-rise building, very good resources and the opportunity to work and develop professionally within a progressive and friendly team that is supported by management.

The Youth Forensic team based within the Youth Specialty Service Otago seeks an experienced Maori Health Cultural Worker to join their multi- disciplinary team on a permanent basis. This is a district wide role and you could be based in either Dunedin or Invercargill.

About the role - About you

In this role you will be expected to provide Tikanga Whakaaro (cultural assessment), Maioha Hou (Treatment Plan and review) whilst enhancing the wellbeing of Whanau, Iwi through Tikanga Maori and restoring balance of Hauora Maori.

You will bring an understanding and an active approach grounded in the use of Te Reo Maori, Tikanga and Whakawhanaungatanga, as well as an unwavering passion for working alongside youth and family within this specialised mental health service.

Most importantly, a deep understanding and first-hand experience in the Maori protocol and traditions will see you excel in this role.

To be successful in this role you will do the following:

  • Advocate for forensic youth, focusing on their optimum care and resilience
  • Undertake a comprehensive assessment and provide treatment advice alongside consultation with the multidisciplinary youth forensic team
  • Provide referral of the youth for any potentially unmet need identified

You will possess a high degree of enthusiasm and initiative in the role, including previous experience in mental health. You will be a strong supportive team player who is proactive in the multidisciplinary team and have a good understanding of working with people from all walks of life without judgement.
