Job Description

Following on from the recent success of productions such as Blue Planet 2 and Seven Worlds One Planet, as well as recent productions for non-BBC clients, the BBC Natural History Unit is embarking on a spectacular landmark project.

We are looking for a Junior Production Manager to join a new landmark series delivering in 2024; a hugely ambitious and genre defining seven-part series for a major global streamer.

The role would suit experienced PCs or JPMs looking for line management experience and those seeking to develop their skills before progressing to PM level. The JPM position is a pivotal member of the production team; you’ll work very closely with the Production Manager and will provide support to the rest of the Production management team. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and experience of high level Natural History production management within a very supportive environment.

This role is offered initially for 12months but with the expectation that the successful applicant could retain the position for up to four years to enable them to experience large scale production throughout all stages of production (contingent on greenlight).

Role Responsibility

  • Direct Line management Responsibilities. Line managing PMAs, Edit Assistants and Base Operations Assistants.
  • Budgeting. Working with PM to maintain an overview of the entire series budget. Responsible for specific areas of the production budget whilst supporting the rest of the team with preparation and management of their episode budgets.
  • Scheduling and strategy â€“working as part of the series management team to plan best use of the funding, allocation of staff and resources.
  • Post-production â€“ Managing tenders for key facilities, scheduling and day-to-day management of the post-production schedule.
  • BFI and SPV experience â€“Assisting the PM and Production Accountant in setting up and running the production as an SPV.
  • Commercial investment  â€“ working as part of the series management team to ensure production delivers on their contractual obligations to all third parties, both editorially and financially.
  • End-to-End Production experience â€“ Both series are in pre-production; by joining the team at this initial stage, you will gain a thorough understanding of all the production processes required to produce very high end, long-running, ambitious Landmark series.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Experience of production budgets, assessing financial viability of content ideas that may arise during production, ensuring resources and editorial aspirations are aligned.
  • Commitment to championing sustainability and promoting green initiatives on productions
  • Proactively looking for ways of improving diversity within the team, and looking at flexible working options to create a happy working environment.
  • Considerable experience of delivering a range of TV productions across a range of output or genres and including natural history, on time and on budget.
  • Experience of monitoring and managing Health & Safety on a production
  • Proven track record of being organised and responsive in fast paced environments
