From the World Cup to the Olympics, whether it’s Premier League football, Six Nations rugby, international cricket or the top tennis tournaments, BBC Sport is at the heart of the world’s major sporting events. Our teams help make sure that every day our audiences are served with all the top stories and analysis, as well as providing world class coverage of the events themselves.
In BBC Sports News we have teams working across TV, Radio and Digital to bring the big stories to our audiences with originality, creativity, and engaging storytelling. We are looking to build the freelance team that can help us to do that across our platforms
This is not an entry level role; we're looking for candidates with experience at journalist level. We will be advertising for more junior roles in the coming months. We will give you the skills to work effectively in our teams from editing, writing, radio and digital production to wider knowledge of our technical systems.
Role Responsibility
Responsibilities would include some of the following:
Being part of a team of content makers in all aspects of TV digital and radio production who spot great stories and generate original journalism.
Writing bulletins content for BBC News Channel or BBC World News; World Service Radio or 5 Live Sport or BBC Sport On-Line.
Breaking quick, accurate, and engaging news stories under pressure and to a high standard.
Helping to make our coverage of the big events like Wimbledon, 2022 Commonwealth Games, Winter Olympics, Women’s Football Euros and the World Cup 2022, even more engaging through creative storytelling on a variety of platforms.
Producing vibrant content in a live, pressurised environment
Assisting with the production of TV Sports News, digital video content and bespoke material that speaks to a range of audiences.
Being receptive to feedback and good at building positive working relationships with peers.
The Ideal Candidate
We would love to hear from you if you have experience in some or all of the following:
Sound editorial judgement and the ability to make quick decisions under pressure.
A passion for the stories that are generated by sport, not only by the stars but underserved members of society.
Working in a live environment, either for broadcast or digital and working on radio programming or podcasting.
A good understanding of how to optimise storytelling for under 34s and the creation and production of content that speaks to this audience or other hard to reach groups.
Mindset is important: we want enthusiasm, ideas and creativity coupled with good communication and organisational skills.
You should be able to write quickly, accurately, and succinctly as well as experience of how to find and generate stories.
We would also be interested to hear of any specialist sporting knowledge and interest.
A strong understanding of social media and online tools and how these can be used to promote BBC Sport’s content.
A sound knowledge of video and radio production techniques.
Able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people.
Demonstrate a commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understand how individual differences can benefit the workplace and output.

We’re holding a drop in session on Tuesday 7th December at 11am where you will have the opportunity to ask any questions about this opportunity. We aim to make this process as inclusive and straight forward as possible. We're here to support you with the application process. The event will have a short intro from some of our staff working in the area followed by a question and answer session around the role. They won’t be able to give any tips on the application process.
