Job Description

Job Introduction

BBC South West is looking for a journalist to join our digital team who will be based in Jersey. As part of the role you will be writing text stories and features covering the Channel Islands and Devon and Cornwall for the BBC News website.

The stories we tell for our local audiences also reach national and international readers on a daily basis and we work closely with our regional colleagues in TV and radio to deliver world-class and multi-platform storytelling.

Role Responsibility

This role involves using your skills to write sharp, accurate text and also to have a keen awareness of still images, video and audio for use on one of the world’s most heavily-used news websites. This will include covering stories for news-led local and national indexes and topic pages online as well as developing original stories and features. You will also develop index management and newsdesk skills as part of a team which co-ordinates online news coverage across the region.

This role offers an opportunity to work with colleagues across Devon, Cornwall and the Channel Islands as well as BBC News to provide the strongest news-led online output for local, national and international audiences.

The Ideal Candidate

You will have significant experience in daily news journalism, proven writing ability, good IT skills and a clear vision of how to translate stories into lively multimedia material. The ability to integrate into a new team and draw effectively on the BBC’s wide range of resources is essential to this post.

You must be able to think up creative treatments for stories and present ideas for original journalism. Additionally, we are looking for individuals who have a good understanding of our audiences to ensure we accurately reflect all under-represented communities within the region.
