Job Introduction

News Intake operates four media hubs across Broadcasting House and BBC Millbank. These roles will be based in our main hub in the BH Newsroom.

Main Responsibilities

As a Journalism Researcher in News Intake you will monitor and coordinate incoming files and feeds from BBC staff on location, news agencies or organisations allied to the BBC.  You will manage live contributions from BBC correspondents and external guests via news packages and IP connected devices by preparing them for broadcast and putting them on air via different platforms.  

In addition you will:

  • Carry out the technical assessment of incoming audio and the technical and editorial assessment of audio-visual and file material.
  • Make recordings of incoming material from a variety of sources. You\'ll also arrange recordings of news and non-news broadcasts, including BBC and non-BBC programmes.
  • Identify the best material and alert programmes proactively to the editorial significance of pictures, audio and accompanying copy.
  • Under the guidance of senior staff on duty, edit rough cut picture compilations and prepare some pre-cut material for transmission.
  • Alert news desks and programmes of editorially important incoming audio and video material, using various communications systems.
  • Capture and enter metadata relating to the audio and video material and ensuring its accuracy. This data will include copyright information and possible restrictions on usage or re-use.
  • Provide material to the nations and regions, agencies and BBC external clients or partners.

Are you the right candidate?

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Ability to work 12 hour shifts on a 24/7 rota including nights, evenings and weekends
  • Experience of working in a newsroom team in an editorial role
  • Experience of using the Jupiter system or a similar asset management system or an ability to acquire these skills
  • A thorough understanding of the main production methods in a multimedia newsroom.    
  • A good understanding of copyright restrictions attached to certain media.
  • Excellent communication skills with the confidence to use them
