About this role
In Applied Research, we work with some of the very latest IT and Network technologies, which helps us design and operate new research environments for our researchers, enabling their scientific breakthroughs and helping them deliver cost savings and new revenue into the business.
As a Downstreaming Research and Innovation Specialist, the role requires a broad range of technical skills in basic network and IT infrastructure, and whilst full knowledge is not expected up front, training will be provided as required and so an aptitude and willingness to learn new areas quickly is essential.
The role will also require an understanding of what it takes to operate a platform with best of breed security tools, techniques and policies.
The role calls for design and build of Research Platform infrastructure and services, as well as contributing design ideas and working with Research Platform users to ensure that they get the best solution for their research project.
You'll have the following responsibilities
Provision of IT/Network support on research projects providing IT advice and professional services to both internal and external clients (requiring working knowledge and expertise across a wide range of network, IT, operating systems, and software, being able to provide technical services for platform users and for local team projects)
Problem solving and solution design including: design implement, test, trial, and demonstrate systems and solutions according to customer requirements, often at short notice and under tight timescales
Lead on Research Platform processes, and help underpin our security posture, including IT and Network management processes.
Continued development of the role – including sharing expertise with team
Juggle competing requirements and demands from multiple customer projects
Contribute to consolidation of test models and environments to common infrastructure and accommodation.
Contribute to resilience challenge (platform stability) for projects using a constantly changing infrastructure
Present to customers and managers or contribute support to presentation teams.
You'll have the following skills & experience
Technical skills in a wide range of areas including, but not limited to:
All IT/Networking
Hardware (server, storage, laptop, etc)
Virtualisation (Vmware, Xen)
Containerisation
VPN and other access technologies
Windows
Security : An understanding of best of breed security policies and processes
Experience you have
Identifies the problem and all relevant issues in straightforward situations; is able to generate possible solutions and assess each using standard procedures, leading to a sound decision.
Prioritises and organises own work to deliver to agreed deadlines.
Able to present technical information clearly in an appropriate style
Builds productive relationships internally and externally.
