About the role

We currently have an exciting opportunity within the National Security Investigations Team (NSIT) for Investigators to join our Covert Online Team, based in Auckland.

NSIT work collaboratively to mitigate threats to New Zealand's National Security through gathering both evidence and intelligence and utilise the information to make informed decisions about prevention strategies or prosecution to mitigate existing or emerging threats.

NSIT's primary focus is on counter terrorism and violent extremism investigations with the assistance of partner agencies.

Investigators will develop a strong knowledge and understanding of themes and drivers that facilitate extremist behaviour. The role allows for and requires flexibility in the workplace. You don't need prior experience in the online space to apply.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Lead investigations utilising current and innovative systems and processes
  • Investigate and manage complex investigations including preparation and management of prosecution cases
  • Manage and maintain sensitive information
  • Manage risk in relation to complex investigations
  • Identify problems, generate solutions and make decisions
  • Manage competing demands and high workload at times
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of plans, projects or initiatives
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with internal and external partners including whole of government agencies and other specialist community groups and organisations
  • Maintains appropriate relationships with police personnel at all levels of the organisation

What you'll bring

You should have the ability to think laterally and consider alternative options when presented with challenges. You will need to demonstrate a tailored approach to your communication styles given the wide range of individuals you will encounter. You should be able to demonstrate an understanding of applying legislation to your work, and ideally you'll have previously experienced evidential capture as part of your role.

Skills & Experience

  • A broad understanding of investigation technique e.g. analysis or criminal investigations
  • Solid understanding of Social Media platforms, how they operate and how people communicate on these platforms
  • Demonstrates the ability to employ a varied and situational approach to communication.
  • Self-motivated and task focused.

Special Requirements

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Special (TSS) security clearance.
  • Successful applicant must reside in Auckland.
  • Due to the nature of work in the covert online space and the fact investigators are exposed to graphic material, a pre-appointment psychological assessment will be completed to deterrmine the applicants suitability to work in this area.
