We are looking for Hydrologists to join our Water Resources and Evaluation (WRE) team within Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO). Based in our Perth, Central Park office you will identify and characterise hydrologic (flooding) risks to current operations and future mine development and then effectively communicate the magnitude to site and multi-disciplinary study and project teams.

Effective management of water is a key priority at Rio Tinto and as a member of Water Resource Evaluation you will gain exposure to water management across the full range of a project’s lifecycle from greenfield development through feasibility studies, operation and into closure.

Reporting to the Senior Hydrologist, you will:
- Undertake the annual flood risk assessment and support the annual wet season management plan development for operational sites
- Provide technical input into expansion studies for Conceptual, Order-of-Magnitude, Pre-feasibility, Feasibility, Life-of-Mine, closure and 5-year mining studies
- Provide advice on surface water management issues to other business services (Approvals, Environment, Engineering and Asset Management, EPCM contractors)
- Support the Specialist and Senior Hydrologist to scope and undertake surface water investigations to establish hydrologic and hydraulic conditions and develop strategic and tactical surface water management plans
- Identify and proactively build and foster strong relationships with hydrogeologists, environmental officers and mining personnel
- Support the Specialist and Senior Hydrologist in engaging and managing consultants for surface water investigations (including the review of consultant’s reports and recommendations)
What you’ll bring
- A commitment to the health and safety of yourself, your team and the environment
- Tertiary qualifications in Civil/ Environmental Engineering, Geography or Environmental Science
- Experience in assessment of surface water flow and flood estimation, surface water management, design of flood mitigation structures and development of surface water management plans
- Practical experience of 1D-2D hydraulic modelling and GIS tools
- The ability to present complex hydrological assessments to a diverse range of stakeholders
- A manual C class drivers’ licence
- Post graduate qualifications in engineering, hydrology or water resource management will be beneficial
