Manager, Health and Safety Services

Location: Toronto Office, 90 Scarsdale Road

Terrapex Environmental Ltd. is a respected and growing consulting company providing environmental, geotechnical and related services to private- and public-sector clients throughout Ontario.  Our services include transactional due diligence, site assessment and remediation, environmental liability management, facilities management, consulting/legal support, geotechnical investigation and design, construction inspection and materials testing, occupational hygiene and environmental and health and safety auditing.  Our core values of Integrity, Technical Excellence, Personal Service, Practical Approach and Respect have informed the firm’s development and have created a work environment focused on client service and employee satisfaction.  We are seeking a new team leader to help us expand the depth of our safety-related consulting services, and to improve upon and promote our internal health and safety culture.  

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the President, the successful candidate’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Health and Safety Consulting:

1. Developing and implementing strategies to secure new business and clients in occupational hygiene and health and safety consulting, including preparation of proposals and presentations and participating in business development activities.
2. Managing and/or executing occupational health and safety and/or industrial hygiene services on a project-by-project basis including:

• regulatory compliance reviews and audits;
• industrial hygiene and air quality sampling;
• occupational noise exposure assessments;
• chemical hazard assessments and toxicological reviews; and
• policy and program development.

1. Developing and maintaining standards, templates, quality control systems and other tools for health and safety consulting work.
2. Supervising and training existing staff and identifying the need for additional resources to meet business needs.

Internal Support:

1. Promote a company culture where health and safety are paramount;
2. Conduct and/or coordinate health and safety audits at Terrapex workplaces, including project work sites;
3. Assist the JHSC to review incident reports, determine root-causes and develop recommendations for corrective measures;
4. Assist with the development of project safety plans and programs;
5. Prepare and facilitate health and safety training;
6. Support the planning, organizing, directing and monitoring of health and safety programs, policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legislative and corporate requirements;
7. Maintain and assist with company compliance with various third-party compliance systems (e.g. ComplyWorks, Avetta, ISNetWorld, IHSA - CORâ„¢).

Preferred Qualifications:

• University degree or diploma in a relevant field (occupational health & safety, environmental and/or safety engineering, safety management, industrial hygiene, sciences);
• Ten years of relevant experience preferred, including working in a consulting capacity;
• Certification (or working towards) CRSP, CHSC, ROH or ROHT or preferred;
• Knowledge of Ontario regulations for Construction Projects and Industrial Establishments;
• IHSA - CORâ„¢ familiarity an asset;
• EHS ISO programs ISO (14001, 18001) familiarity an asset;
• Available for overtime and travel; valid driver’s license and access to reliable vehicle;
• Logical approach, detail oriented, and problem solving oriented;
• Ability to clearly and effectively present and communicate information (written and verbal), adjusting language or terminology to the needs of the audience, while exercising respect, tact and courtesy.
• Good judgment and interpersonal skills; eye for detail and analytical mindfulness
• Self-starter with ability to prioritize effectively to meet tight deadlines and work well under pressure.
