Job Description

The Head of Public Engagement and Communication is responsible for providing strategic communications leadership in support of NZ's COVID-19 Response.

The role leads, develops and delivers public engagement and communication including the Unite Against COVID-19 public information campaign, maintaining an agile and resilient operating model to support the evolving needs of the response

The role works closely with the GMs of Communications / Engagement across Government, particularly the Ministry of Health.

It leads a core team of around 40 people across several teams and guides their strategies, plans and tactics, providing expert advice and timely decisions.

We select on capability and welcome a wide range of applications where the candidate can demonstrate the following :

  • Significant experience in people leadership, managing effective teams with a positive team culture, and a focus on developing the team.
  • Senior level experience working at the political interface, with ministerial offices and briefing Ministers.
  • Significant budget / financial and procurement experience, ideally within a government agency.
  • Significant senior experience developing and delivering integrated campaigns, communications and engagement strategies.
  • Proficiency in digital campaign and communication tools e.g. digital / web content management and systems, and social media platforms.
  • Ability to assimilate new and complex information and provide advice accordingly.
  • Ability to be innovative and creative in working through issues and problems as they arise.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of, and commitment to, the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and able to sustain an environment that promotes diversity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrates high levels of integrity, self-responsibility and focus on quality.
