The Abuse in Care Royal Commission of Inquiry places survivors at the heart of its mahi.

The Commission has recently re-aligned its organisational structure to ensure it can deliver its large work programme leading towards delivering our final report to the Governor-General in June 2023. As a result of this restructure, there are a number of new employment opportunities that have been created across the organisation.

We are currently seeking a Head of Governance to lead our governance mahi and manage our PMO office. The Head of Governance will lead the secretariat and advisory services provided to Commissioners including implementation of meeting processes and procedures, minute-taking and planning of the forward agenda for the Tō Tātou Mahere Committee and the Programme Steering Committee. The role also oversees critical Commission-wide mechanisms, such as charters and Memoranda of Understanding, administration of key Commission policies and programme management and reporting functions.

As the Head of Governance, some key areas of responsibility include:

• Providing strategic and intellectual leadership to the business unit and as a member of the directorate's Leadership team
• Effectively managing a team of PMO and governance professionals
• Providing strategic and intellectual leadership and direction, setting direction and performance expectations and monitoring overall progress against those directives and performance expectations
• Overseeing the monitoring of the inquiry's roadmap Tō Tātou Mahere, and managing the delivery and landing of advice and tasks with senior leaders and presents frank advice
• Foster a 'one Royal Commission team' culture, where staff understand the need for adaptability, flexibility and readiness for change

Skills and experiences

The key skills and experience we are looking for include, but are not limited to, the following:

• A relevant tertiary or professional qualification or proven work experience commensurate with this position
• The role of the public service, the machinery of government and the independent role of a Royal Commission
• All aspects of communications including written, oral and relationship management
• Demonstrated understanding of and experience working in accordance with the Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its principles
• At least five years experience working in a governance role
• Proven experience in providing efficient and effective administration services preferably to a senior executive team or an advisory or statutory body
• Prior experience building and maintaining strong and effective working relationships
• Demonstrated experience in exercising sound judgement and tact
• Ability to communicate complex ideas to a variety of audiences and build and maintain rapport with others
• Understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural issues and concerns, in particular, knowledge of tikanga Māori, and Pacific people's culture
• Understanding and appreciation of disability issues and working with people with disabilities
• Experience of being adept at managing complex work programmes within agreed timeframes and budget
• Experience with prioritizing the demands of a diverse range of stakeholders
