Summary

The Department of Regional (DRNSW), Mining, Exploration and Geoscience (MEG) division is currently looking for a dynamic Geoscience Database Administrator to maintain and enhance geoscientific datasets within the Information Management team. This role is a great opportunity for a strategic thinking individual who enjoys collaborating with different stakeholder groups and working with a variety of data.

About Us

The (DRNSW) was formed in 2020 as a central agency for regional issues. The Department has responsibility for building resilient regional economies and communities, strengthening primary industries, managing the use of regional land, overseeing the state's mineral and mining resources and ensuring government investment in regional NSW is fair and delivers positive outcomes for local communities and businesses.

Within DRNSW, the (MEG) division sets strategic policy for the state's mineral and energy resources, gathers, analyses and disseminates geoscientific information, and assesses and determines applications for mineral and petroleum titles for exploration activities and extractive uses. Through its Resources Regulator Branch the Group ensures the safe and sustainable functioning of the industry in NSW.

About the role

The Geoscience Database Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day coordination of the organisation's geoscientific datasets including drilling, field observations, mineral deposit locations and geochemistry, and the management of its Data Warehouse, ensuring the provision of quality geoscientific data through online delivery systems. This role is comfortable using and implementing innovative technologies to achieve the strategic objectives of the Division and support the dissemination of quality geoscientific data.

Working as a Geoscience Database Administrator you will:

Manage the Data Warehouse system, conducting daily monitoring tasks and implementing systems improvements to ensure functionality and accessibility of data.

Provide advanced SQL database analysis, documenting business requirements, performing database architecture design and data modelling to ensure systems can receive, validate, and deliver data to end users.

Plan, organise and control activities relating to the extraction of data from company exploration and mining reports to expand geological data sets.

Develop and administrator data validation systems and workflows applied to geoscience data management to comply with business rules and ensure data integrity.

Supervise contractors undertaking data extraction, validation and uploading of data to databases to ensure data integrity

Establish collaborative relationships and liaise with data custodians to ensure data collection and storage meet best practice standards

To be successful in this role:

Have significant autonomy in making day to day decisions within work projects.

Be able to identify the priority requirements of internal and external stakeholders that require action.

Undertake and deliver work priorities and projects allocated by the Manager, Data Management & Delivery.

Demonstrate experience working in the exploration and mining industry, specifically working with exploration and mining data.

Have well-developed skills in the administration of geological databases, including relational data modelling and implementing quality control workflows.

Be experienced in writing and using SQL scripts and ETL processes.

Some familiarity with programming languages is desirable e.g. PHP.

Essential requirements:

Degree qualification in Geology, Earth Sciences or equivalent, or equivalent experience.

Valid driver's licence and ability and willingness to travel.
