What’s the scope of the role?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for you to work as a Programme Manager – Management of the Asset to deliver important parts of the nuclear decommissioning programme. 

This post is fundamentally characterised by the requirement for the Programme Managers to develop strategies and practical solutions of business issues of critical importance which are initially open scope and not well defined. These are usually a first for the business/stations concerned so successful applicants will need to stand-up the necessary portfolio of projects for delivery of their programme. The programme progress, risks, issues, changes, variances and exceptions must be monitored and reported.

The AGR decommissioning programme affects multiple locations, so successful realisation of programme outcomes will require implementation by different teams at different sites in parallel.

  

What will you be doing?

Accountable for the integration of station teams, Contractors and CTO support functions, for the delivery of the programme to ensure safety is maintained and defueling costs reduced. Strong advocate on effective use of organisational learning tools to address performance issues and to ensure that good practises are captured and successfully replicated elsewhere (lead and learn).

You will be a member of the Defueling Preparations team reporting directly to the Category Manager.  Responsible for the following:
 

  • Developing and managing the strategy for the programme of work for which you are accountable; ensuring scope is defined and change controlled in accordance with company procedures.
  • Monitor and manage live and up to date risk, opportunity and assumptions registers. Initiates correct action, as appropriate, to de-risk the deliverables.
  • Establish and manage programme governance and oversight arrangements. Sets standards and holds individuals accountable for delivery; to share performance shortfalls and capture best practice to continually improve local and fleet performance.
  • Reporting progress on business benefits and outcomes at regular intervals to the programme board(s).
  • Ensuring sufficient buy-in and builds confidence from stakeholders, governance and oversight groups, senior management and the programme team leads through open communication, emotional intelligence and the ability to simplify the complex technical issues and tailor key messages for the relevant stakeholder group.
  • Maintain critical long-term thinking to make necessary changes as the programme matures, including seamless transition and integration of programme outputs to the next ‘in-line’ ND category.
  • Provide leadership in a matrix organisation; to co-ordinate the strategy and delivery of the integrated activities from larger teams made up of internal, contract partner and agency staff who will be based at both Barnwood and at power stations. 
  • Interact with external stakeholders including representatives of the regulators (ONR, EA and SEPA) and the Client to ensure that value for money is demonstrated for work which qualifies for reimbursement from the Nuclear Liabilities Fund (NLF).
  • Deputise for the Category Manager as required.  

What skills will you need?

You will need to be qualified to degree level in a technical or engineering field (or acceptable equivalent) Chartered Engineer or similar relevant professional qualification advantageous. APMP/MSP (or equivalent) desirable. 

  • Working knowledge of health & safety and nuclear safety requirements.
  • Strong leadership, team and collaborative management track record.
  • Strong integration skills, and proven coordination/influencing skills, to motivate and matrix manage blended teams (comprising EDF staff, agency & contract partners) to successfully deliver required outcomes.
  • Proven record of success in leading and delivering large, complex projects and programmes in an operational environment.
  • Experience of establishing and managing governance and oversight arrangements within NG business – centre and stations.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills – including experience of successfully working across multiple sites, engaging EDF Energy stakeholders and effectively managing external stakeholders.
  • The ability to think strategically to develop a coherent programme and re-evaluate the strategy when necessary.
  • The ability to apply problem solving, technical and people leadership skills to develop structured, innovative and fit for purpose solutions to address issues which are often open-scope and not well defined.
  • Personal resilience and the ability to deal with uncertainty and change; the ability to support programme team members in an environment of uncertainty and change.
  • Understanding of the operational aspects of nuclear. Nuclear decommissioning knowledge is desirable.
  • Knowledge of engineering, design, procurement, safety case, construction and installation/commissioning management, and commercial contracting.
  • Fully versed in modern project and programme management techniques within complex, multi-functional organisations.
  • Knowledge of all NG liability management agreements and associated requirements (NLFA, NLF etc). 

What rewards will you get?

The salary for this role will be circa £80,000 per annumtogether with 25 days annual holiday plus bank holidays, a company pension, flexible benefit scheme and bonus.
