Job Description

The Role

Our tight knit and supportive team are looking to welcome a dynamic
and experienced Veterinary Surgeon who believes in client and animal care. They will have the benefit of good case continuity, excellent kit and highly trained Veterinary Nurses; and the opportunity to pursue their own area of interest. Being a mixed practice variety is undoubtedly part of the role, but consulting, surgery and time on visits is always available. Contributing to the out of hours rota (currently 1:7) will give plenty of time for exploring our beautiful part of the world. An interest in flock and herd health planning would complement the team and the work we do already for our farm clients.

The role is full time (40 hours) working 5 days a week between 08:30 - 18:30. You will be required to do an equal share of the OOH rota which is currently 1 in 7 week nights and weekends. We would also consider part time working hours. The salary range is from £38,000-£42,000.

About Us

Our practice has been established for over 100 years and in the heart of the spa town of Buxton. The work is approximately 60% small animal with the remainder being beef and sheep clients with a small amount of dairy and first opinion equine work. A number of our vets are certificate holders and alongside our sister practice McMurtry and Harding can offer orthopaedic and endoscopic services.

On the farm side we have a significant number of our dairy clients are on Health Plans and have Lameness and Johnes advisers on board. There is TB work, but we try to use our TB testers to perform the majority of this and they support our farm health planning work on the Wednesdays.

We are a tier 2 practice and a Veterinary Nurse training practice. We have 3 consultation rooms, separate dog, cat & isolation wards. Our in-house laboratory is fully kitted with modern Idexx equipment enabling us to do our own biochemistry, haematology and endocrinology testing. The ultrasound scanner and CR x-ray system are a cut above too. We try to maximise the use of Nursing clinics to deliver a holistic approach to the care of our patients, allowing Vets more time to concentrate on the clinical cases.

We are proud to offer our own out of hours service which enables us to provide the best possible animal care and continuity of service.

Having the Peak District on our doorstep means you can spend your evenings unwinding in the beautiful countryside or running, cycling and training for triathlons as some of our more energetic staff seem to do.

Overdale, is 1 of 4 practices forming the Derbyshire Veterinary Services Group. This allows us to draw on a massive and varied range of experience including several certificate holders amongst the Vets, and several more critical care trained nurses.

It is important that our staff are able reach their full potential so we encourage regular CPD and there are plenty of opportunities to gain new experience or practice your existing skills. There is also the option to undertake training to become a mentor or coach to a Graduate Veterinary Surgeon.

At the surgery we currently have 7 Vets, 8 Veterinary Nurses, and 5 support staff.

Applicant Requirements

We are looking for an enthusiastic and conscientious Veterinary Surgeon who is confident to perform routine operations. You will need to be experienced in dealing with both companion and farm animals and, be committed to continuous development.
