Job Description

The Gore District Council (GDC) is one of three local authorities in Southland, the southernmost province of New Zealand. The GDC looks after the Gore District, which covers a population of about 12,400 with two main towns in the district are Gore and Mataura, with smaller settlements at Pukerau, Waikaka and Mandeville.

About the Role:

This role is to provide administrative, clerical, secretarial and general support support to the Mayor and Chief Executive by responding promptly to requests, document processing and general administrative support.

This will involve:

  • Attendance at meetings, and the subsequent timely production of accurate reports from those meetings.
  • The role is a “gate keeper” for a raft of information circulated from across the Council organisation. A highly professional presentation is required along with an excellent standard of spelling and grammar.
  • Responsibility for the operation of the Council’s grants schemes, including Creative Communities, Rural Halls and Domains, Sport New Zealand rural travel fund in addition to providing administrative support to the Pioneer Women’s Memorial Trust.
  • Regular liaison with key stakeholders.
  • Ensure prompt attention to correspondence.
  • Organising travel and accommodation for the Mayor and Chief Executive.

Skills and Experience:



  • Excellence written and oral communication skills and report writing.
  • Computer literate including MS suites (advanced word processing skills are essential).
  • Relationship management skills and the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the business.
  • A positive “can-do” attitude together with an open and inquisitive mind.
  • Ability to multi-task and work with minimum supervision, manage workflows in a logical and timely manner and prioritise tasks.
  • Willingness to take ownership of delegated responsibilities.
  • Solutions focused and the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and custom.
