Job Description

We are a state government organisation made up of more than 28,000 people and we're in the middle of delivering the largest transport infrastructure program in Australia's history. We work across planning, policy and procurement, harnessing data and technology to develop smarter and more adaptive transport solutions.

That means job opportunities in metropolitan and regional areas right across NSW – you have the chance to be part of creating a lasting legacy that will benefit generations to come.

 About team

The Safety, Environment and Regulation (SER) division leads policy, strategy, standards, advice and support across safety, environment, sustainability, asset management and regulatory outcomes for customers, community, and our people (including contractors).  SER provides ‘centres of excellence’ with a critical mass of expertise to support line accountability, facilitate consistency and provide assurance across the transport. Environment & Sustainability is a branch within SER accountable for Environment & Sustainability policy, practice and support to programs, projects, and operations.

 The opportunity

Right now, we have an opportunity for an Environment and Sustainability Manager in the Rail Operations Team within SER. The role primarily supports Sydney Trains’ Engineering & Maintenance Branch (EMB). EMB manages a $1.5 billion annual maintenance program on behalf of Sydney Trains and NSW Trains – delivering a safe, reliable passenger fleet and metropolitan rail network, to meet growing customer demand and keep Sydney moving.

In this role, you will be responsible for providing high-quality, timely, factual and pragmatic environmental and sustainability management advices, and supporting client areas including, Sydney Trains, whilst leveraging off other environmental and sustainability regulators.

This role will ensure best environment and sustainability outcomes are achieved for critical projects, with minimal impacts to the environment, heritage, and local communities.

Stepping into this dynamic role, you will have the opportunity to support the Engineering & Maintenance Major Works team undertaking the Lithgow Area Remodelling Signalling project. You also will support the safe, efficient, and sustainable delivery of other projects in the remodelling program including completion of Gosford, Mount Victoria, and Dapto to Kiama projects as well as forthcoming remodelling projects at Clyde, Penrith, Morriset, and Campbelltown.

You will join a multi-disciplinary team of environment specialists that works collaboratively to achieve optimal business outcomes. As an Environmental advocate, you will be a trusted adviser providing accurate and considered advice and support across a diverse range of topics, assisting EMB in achieving best practice environment and sustainability outcomes, in line with regulatory compliance, NSW Government policy and contemporary good practice.

The role is responsible for working with the business unit on preparation, submission and approval of environmental impact assessment documentation, building relationships with internal and external stakeholders related to the activities and needs of their client portfolio.

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Undertake and manage negotiations for property acquisition, including complex matters to enable timely access to the property required for Transport for NSW works
  • Ensure the team completes due diligence and compensation is assessed per policy, guidelines and legislative requirements while maintaining compliance with the TfNSW assurance and governance requirements.
  • Lead and manage any necessary changes to land acquisition processes continuously to ensure compliance with all statutory and NSW Government land acquisition policy requirements
  • Actively participate in project teams and provide sound advice in valuation and property acquisition to support the flow of information to the Unit, Branch, and the Transport for NSW agency
  • Assist the Director Property Land Access in the supply of progress reports on the compliance and governance of all acquisitions
